Girls swim dominates Patriots 134-36

Ramona High School’s girls swim team came within 6 points of a perfect score at the Bulldogs’ Valley League dual meet March 30 at home against Orange Glen.

Ramona took a 134-36 victory over the Patriots. A school can enter up to three swimmers in individual events, in which the top five finishers are scored, and up to two relay teams in each race, in which the top three finishers are scored, so 140 points would constitute a perfect score.

“It was a pretty decisive victory today,” said Ramona coach Jolyn Yanez.

Ramona took first place in all 11 races. The meet saw Brianna Hogervorst earn her first varsity win after swimming the 100-yard backstroke in 1:20.18. Two races later Hogervorst had her first win as part of a relay team—Brice Maruna, Katherine Abbott, Hogervorst and Gina Lucas swam the 400-yard freestyle race in 4:12.57.

Breann Stevens and Lucas each won two individual races. Stevens swam the 200-yard freestyle race in 2:00.66 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:37.31. Lucas took 2:20.58 in the 200-yard individual medley and 1:14.52 in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Lisse Litka-Baughman won the 50-yard freestyle race with a time of 26.56 seconds, Madi Lanz took 1:02.62 to win the 100-yard butterfly, and Maruna’s time of 1:00.96 won the 100-yard freestyle.

Lucas, Sydney Davison, Abbott and Ellie Carrano won the 200-yard medley relay in 2:04.92. Lanz, Taylor Shinnick, Litka-Baughman and Stevens won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:48.89.

The Bulldogs will return to competition April 13 with a tri-meet at Del Norte High School. The varsity will face Canyon Crest while the junior varsity will compete against both Canyon Crest and Del Norte.

Ramona’s next home meet will be April 20 against San Marcos.
