Softball offense hits 13 to win

Ramona High School’s softball team had a busy week. The Lady Dawgs beat Canyon Crest Academy in a North County Tournament game and Serra High School in a makeup game, but lost to Torrey Pines, Poway and Carlsbad in the North County Tournamant.

Ramona is now 3-9 on the season.

The team lost the first game of the North County Tournament 6-0 to Torrey Pines, whose pitcher, Lauren Hynes, threw a no-hit shutout.

Ally Harvey got the start and pitched well. She pitched four and a third innings and took the loss. She did not give up an earned run and gave up four hits and struck out three.

Kellsie Domnitz finished in the circle and gave up three runs on four hits and struck out one.

Ramona co-captain Hillary Roloff had to leave the game after suffering a dislocated shoulder while fielding a fly ball at first base.

In the second game of a doubleheader, Ramona lost to Poway 6-3. Domnitz went the distance in the circle and picked up the loss. She gave up three earned runs in six innings, gave up four hits and struck out a season high seven.

Ramona’s offense came alive and stroked six hits. Kim Whelehon led with two hits. KK Melgoza, Lexi Slater, Tory Roberts and Emily Vandervort also contributed hits in the game, with Melgoza driving in two runs in the game.

The Lady Bulldog offense erupted for 13 hits in a 9-3 decision over Canyon Crest Academy. Harvey got the start and went three innings. She gave up two earned runs on three hits.

Domnitz came in relief and picked up the win. She went the final four innings, and Vandervort paced the offense with three hits in four trips to the plate. Melgoza, Whelehon, Courtney Fick and Alexis Sharpe ripped two hits apiece, and Cassie Ford, Slater and Roberts contributed one hit each.

Roberts drove in three runs. Fick and Ford drove in one run each.

The Lady Dawg defense turned in two double plays. The base running play of the day occurred when Roberts drove a ball to the centerfield fence. The Raven centerfielder made a diving catch on the play. Fick tagged on the play and scored from second base to tie the game.

The Lady Dawgs lost to Rancho Bernardo High School 12-1 in a tournament game on Ramona’s home diamond. The Broncos hit three home runs and collected 18 hits.

Slater went 2-for-3 and drove in Ramona’s only run. Melgoza, Fick and Ford also hit safely in the game.

Julie Ward went the distance as pitcher and picked up her first varsity win in a 2-1 victory over Serra High School. Ward limited Serra to three hits and one earned run and struck out two. She also collected one hit in two trips to the plate.

Slater, Fick and Ford also hit safely for the Lady Bulldogs. Melgoza drove in the winning run in the fifth inning.

Ramona lost on the road to Carlsbad 7-2. Fick accounted for all of Ramona’s scoring as she drove in Slater with a two-run home run in the first inning. Melgoza and Ford picked up Ramona’s only singles in the game. Kellsie Domnitz went the distance on the mound and took the loss.
