Baseball team has 2-1 week

Ramona picked up two varsity baseball wins and lost one game in pool play in the North County Tournament. The Dawgs are now 6-2 as they enter the Lions Tournament this week.

The Bulldog nine opened the North County Tournament with a decisive 8-0 victory over San Pasqual High School. The game was supposed to be a pitching battle between two of the North County’s best pitchers, San Pasqual’s Stevey Carr and Ramona’s Cody Willingham.

Willingham held up his end of the hype. The University of California Irvine bound right-hander had his best outing of the season, going six innings of shutout ball while striking out nine and limiting the Eagles to four hits.

Beau Sulser finished in relief, going one inning as he struck out two and gave up one hit.

Carr did not pitch poorly, but his team did not give him much support. Ramona scored five runs in the first inning on three hits and two errors and one mental error as the Dawgs sent nine hitters to the plate.

Brady Wilson’s initial run was all that Willingham and Sulser would need.

Smiley Willeford led the Dawgs offensive attack going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Wilson, Blake Drake, Jackson Willeford and Nick Skinner also contributed hits to the attack. Skinner delivered a pinch hit triple. Drake and Jackson Willeford both contributed an RBI.

The Dawgs beat Escondido High School 5-2 on the road. Erik Ernst went the distance on the mound to pick up the win. Ernst  gave up two runs in seven innings work scattering six hits and striking out three.

Ramona scored two runs in the top of the first inning. With two out, Drake doubled. Smiley Willeford drove Blake in with a double and Kyle Gray finished up the scoring with an RBI single.

In the third inning, Drake drew a one out walk. Gray doubled him in with a two out double. The Dawgs scored two insurance runs in the sixth inning when Jackson Willeford doubled with two down. Wilson drove in Jackson with a triple and Skinner drove in Wilson to end the scoring.

Ramona lost to Vista at Rocky Lawler Field 8-1. Jason Snodgrass started on the hill and got the loss. Vista limited the Dawg offense to five hits. Wilson scored Ramona’s only run in the third inning when he walked,  stole second base and scored on an error.

Michael Scodellaro and Jackson Willeford both went 2-for-3 at the plate. Kyle Gray picked up one hit in two trips.
