Bulldog tennis wins 1, loses 1

The Ramona High School varsity tennis team lost to Westview High School 14-4 and then bounced back to beat Oceanside High School in two Valley League matches last week. The Lady Dawgs are now 3-3 on the year and 2-1 in league action.

Westview’s singles players took all nine sets in the match. Ramona’s Jennica Castillo went 1-6, 1-6 and 1-6, Rachel Vaca turned in scores of 1-6, 2-6 and 0-6, and Andrea Briseno posted scores of 1-6, 3-6 and 2-6.

Ramona’s number one doubles team, Katie Hoffman and Rebeca Romero, won three sets with scores of 6-4, 7-5 and 6-4. Rachel Williams and Sami Marsch earned Ramona’s other team point by going 3-6, 6-4 and 2-6. Ashley Shields and Dayna Lake went 2-6, 4-6 and 1-6.

The Lady Bulldogs then played their best match so far this year, beating the Pirates 17-1.

The doubles teams dominated the match. Oceanside only won one game in the match.

Hoffman and Shields went 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0, Romero and Lake went 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, and Vaca and Briseno swept their opponents with scores of 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0.

In singles action, Williams went 6-4, 2-6 and 6-0. Castillo won two sets, going 6-2 and 6-0. Jordan McWhorter won a point by going 6-2, and Sami Marsch picked up 3 points with scores of 6-0, 6-2 and 6-2.

Junior varsity

The junior varsity tennis team split in Valley League play as they lost to Westview 16-2 and beat Oceanside High School.

Ramona picked up both of its team points in the first match in doubles action. Amy Jordan and Laura Meng went 0-6, 6-2 and 2-6. Taylor Romero and Nicole Mulligan won a set by going 6-3, Savannah Goodson and Nikki Rogers went 1-6, 2-6 and 4-6, Lauran Callan and Nicloe Mulligan went 1-6, and Callan and Romero went 2-6.

Ali Geber went 1-6, 0-6 and 3-6. Amy Mazzola went 4-6, 1-6 and 1-6, and Abigail Ward posted scores of 3-6, 2-6 and 0-6.

Amy Jordan, Laura Meng and Ali Geber all won three sets apiece. Savannah Goodson and Nikki Rogers won three sets.

Amy Mazzola and Abigail Ward also took three team points for the Lady Dawgs. Laura Callan and Taylor Romero won one set. Tayleor Romero and Nicole Mulligan won two sets.
