A 36-year-old Florida man in San Diego on business was killed in a head-on crash on Wildcat Canyon Road near Case de Carol on Tuesday. Wildcat Canyon Road was closed south of San Vicente Road for about two hours after the collision.

Keith Sexton was southbound on Wildcat Canyon Road just before 12:45 p.m. when a northbound 2004 Chevy 2500 pickup truck driven by Jeffrey James, 46, of Ramona, veered into Sexton’s lane, officials said. Sexton was driving a 1988 Chevy 1500 pickup

truck.

For reasons that are still under investigation, James’ truck failed to

maintain the right half of the roadway, crossed the solid double yellow

lines and collided head-on with Sexton’s vehicle, CHP Officer Brian

Pennings said. The collision left James’ truck blocking the northbound and southbound lanes and the deceased’s vehicle down a dirt embankment, said Pennings.

Emergency crews cut the top of the 1988 Chevy and Ramona paramedics initiated advanced cardiac life support measures in an effort to save the victim, but he died at the scene, said CalFire Battalion Chief Saul Villagomez. Because the truck had gone about 50 feet down the embankment onto grass and vegetation, rescuers had a hose ready if a fire sparked, said Villagomez.

James was treated at the scene for lacerations to his left arm and will seek his own medical aid, Pennings said. Sexton wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, said Pennings.
