Summer tennis stars

Riviera Oaks Racquet Club hosted three United States Tennis Association tournaments this year. The first tournament in February was for adults and two junior tournaments were in May and July.

Results of the last tournament:

Riviera Oaks Summer Junior Novice

• Boys 10’s winner was Andrew Hu, and the finalist was Kevin Chen, both from San Diego.

• Boys 12’s winner was Joshua Failla of Ramona, and the finalist was Zongyi Li of San Diego.

• Boys 14’s winner was Christian Failla of San Juan, Puerto Rico (son of Doug Failla, Riviera Oaks Racquet Club’s head pro), and the finalist was Daniel Streeter of Ramona.

• Girls 8’s winner was Rebecca Gonzalez of San Diego, and the finalist was Julia Failla of Ramona.

• Girls 14’s winner was Susan Wu of San Diego, and the finalist was Sarah Alexander of Bonita.

• Girls 16’s winner was Amanda Molstre of Murrieta, and the finalist was Antonieta Torres of Chula Vista.

“We had a great tournament season and thank all participants for coming out to play,” said Brenda Phillips, tennis manager and activities coordinator for Riviera Oaks Resort and Racquet Club.

Doug Failla, head pro at Riviera Oaks, completed his first summer with the club. He offered tennis and sports/tennis/swim camps June through July and continues to offer lessons, junior programming and racquet stringing as well as weekly free tennis clinics.

The club’s tennis plans for Fall/Winter include Cardio Tennis on Friday mornings, Competitive Junior Program, Mixed Doubles socials and Racquet Club barbecue.

Santa will visit the Racquet Club on Dec. 5, and the Riviera Oaks Tennis Ladder Championship will be held that afternoon.

Tennis Camp is scheduled from Dec. 28 through Jan. 1, and the Fun Tennis Tournament will be on Jan. 2. A Super Bowl Party and Tennis Mixer will be held Feb. 7.

Riviera Oaks Racquet Club courts are also open for public rental. The club also has rental equipment for the public’s use.

Riviera Oaks Racquet Club is a tennis club that has full-time head tennis professional, a fitness facility and offers a range of memberships. All tennis events, camps, lessons, etc. are open to the public. The weekly free tennis clinics are open to members only.
