Ramona Pop Warner Junior PeeWee Attack Dawgs players kicked off their 2009 season Saturday by taking a big bite out of the Rancho Penasquitos Stampede with a 35-6 victory.

The dominating defense and fundamentally sound offensive line were the unsung heroes of the day. The offensive line spent the day manhandling the Stampede’s defensive line, opening holes for running backs Shawn Coane and Dylan Luna, who combined for four of the Attack Dawgs five scores.

However, it was Ramona’s stingy defense that was credited with being the key to the victory.

The Attack Dawgs only allowed two first downs in the first half of play, and the only score by the Stampede came with 24 seconds left in the game.

It was a swarming defense led by hard-hitting linebackers and an aggressive defensive line, but it was the hard-hitting “shut down” cornerback, Kellan Starmack, who stole the spotlight with his interception and 47-yard return for a touchdown.
