Emergency shelter volunteers needed

Share

When disaster strikes, Ramona cannot rely on outside agencies “down the hill” to respond quickly to its needs, a reason Ramona Emergency Assistance League (REAL) is looking for volunteers to be trained by the American Red Cross in shelter operations.

Disasters can happen anywhere at any time. During the Witch, Cedar and Pines fires, emergency shelters were opened in Ramona, and they provided food and assistance to thousands of people.

Training for volunteers will include:

• Procedures for opening, operating and closing shelters.

• Organizing available human resources as a shelter operations team.

• Identifying resources available to assist shelter workers.

• Organizing the physical shelter and material resources to meet the needs of the people in the shelter.

Training will be conducted in Ramona and is required before a disaster occurs. The first training will be in the fall, and it will be completed in one day and include a shelter simulation exercise.

Volunteers need to be at least 18 years old. They will need to join REAL and complete a background check.

For more information, contact REAL at info@ramona-cert.org or www.ramona-cert.org/home/shelter.
