JV football also hangs onto first

The Ramona junior varsity football team remained in first place in the Valley League by beating Orange Glen on the road 34-14.

The JVs are now 6-1 on the season and will play Del Norte High School tonight at The Dawg Pound at 7 in a non-league game against the new school. The frosh football team will play at 4:30 in the first game of a doubleheader.

The JVs took the opening kickoff and drove the length of the field to take control of the game. Ramona scored the first 28 points and led 28-0 at intermission. Every healthy Bulldog played in the game and several Bulldogs had more difficulty beating the flu bug than they did with Orange Glen.

Because it was a mis-match, the Bulldogs only attempted six passes. Travis Stevens went 4-6 in the game for 60 yards. Dallas Jansen (11 yards), Eli Jauregui (12 yards), Garlan Marshall (13 yards) and Jeremiah Jordan (24 yards) each caught one pass.

The offensive line had to move several starters to new positions because of the flu, but they paved the way for the offense to rush for 133 yards. Luke Papps, Andrew Lisowski, Brandon Barnum, Nich Heimpel, Paul Loska, Nick Fitzpatrick and Ben Wood made holes for Tyler Weaver-Villa (77 yards, td), Connor Guasti (5 yards), Kirk Kaliszewsi (69 yards, td) and Stevens (20 yards, td).

The defense set the tone of the game and did not allow a first down in the first half. Nathan Snyder scooped and scored (picked up a fumble and ran for a touchdown) for the Dawgs. Jauregui intercepted a pass to give the offense a short field and set up a touchdown.

Chandler Vasquez had several tackles for losses and Derek Harlan played well at middle backer.

The only drawback in the game was the punt return team fumbled two punts for turnovers in the third period.

The frosh Bullpups played well and actually dominated the time of possession and total yardage but lost to Orange Glen 22-16.

Ramona drove to the OG 1 yard line in the first period, but an errant lateral on a fourth down play was picked up by the Patriots and returned for a touchdown. Orange Glen used an onside kick to get the ball back and on its first play went 50 yards to score 14 points in 10 seconds.

Ramona then drove 62 yards to score on a six yard Elias Chavez run. Chavez scored the conversion on a run and the Pups trailed 14-8.

Orange Glen scored what turned out to be the winning touchdown with 16 seconds left in the half to lead 22-8 at intermission.

Chavez scored on a draw play hand off in the third period and added a PAT to make it a 22-16 game.

The Bullpup defense played very well in the third period. Rhett Henry had several tackles for losses, recovered a fumble and shut down the Pat running game.

Jacob Triplett tackled the Pat punter for a 24-yard loss and Tyler Pavlick sacked the quarterback for a 15-yard loss. The Bullpup offense had three short fourth down attempts but could not convert and the Patriots held on to win the game.
