The Bulldog junior varsity football team lost to Oceanside 28-10, finishing the season with a school 9-2 record and sharing the Valley League championship with Oceanside. Both teams had a 5-1 record in league play.

Oceanside got off to a 14-0 lead. Late in the first half, Ramona lined up in punt formation but called for a fake punt. Christian Glotfelty took the snap from Connor Guasti and followed a key block by Bolton Lenard and serpentined down the sideline for a 58-yard touchdown. Jeremiah Jordan added the extra point to make it a 14-7 game. Oceanside drove the distance of the field to make the score 21-7 at intermission.

The Bulldogs went into the red zone early in the third quarter and Jordan hit his second field goal in two weeks from 31 yards out to make it a 21-10 game. Ramona was forced to try to convert a fourth down with less than five minutes to play in the game and gave the Pirates excellent field position, which they converted into the final score of the game.

Kirk Kaliszewski led the Dawgs with 70 rushing yards. Travis Stevens completed four passes for 26 yards. Dallas Jansen had one catch for 10 yards. Angelo Valdez (5 yards) and Trevor Dotson (3 yards) had one reception each. Jeremiah Jordan caught one Stevens pass and was on the end of a Dotson halfback pass for 65 yards. Jordan also returned a kickoff and a punt for 123 yards.

Alec Gahreeb had an interception and played well on defense, and Coach Marc Boykins praised linebackers Derek Harlan and Steve Rothermel.

Ramona High School’s freshman team ended its season at the Dawg Pound by losing to Valley League champion Oceanside High School. The Bullpups finished the season with a 2-9 record and were 1-5 in the Valley League.

“Our team was very resilient,” said Coach Mike Ernst. “They dealt with much adversity and more than their share of injuries and sickness, yet they always worked hard. Several players had to learn new positions on short notice and did so and played hard. The players from this team will improve its record next season and will contribute to the RHS football program in the future.”

Elias Chavez scored Ramona’s only touchdown on a 7-yard run. The TD was set up by two Javier Dominguez receptions. Dominguez caught a 35-yard halfback pass from Chavez and a 19-yard toss from quarterback Hunter McHargue. Kevin Conroy kicked the PAT. Conroy also returned a kickoff for 51 yards in the game.

Zack White also completed two passes for the Bullpups. White hit Alex “the Dude” Rogers for a 20-yard gain and he connected with Darrel Millen for a 4-yard completion.

Daniel Kemp made the defensive play of the game by sacking the Pirate quarterback for an 8-yard loss.
