A JV football win tomorrow means league championship

Jeremiah Jordan was having a bad day. He ran the opening kickoff back for what appeared to be a 92-yard touchdown only to have it nullified by a questionable penalty call.

A pass thrown to him was deflected for an interception that led to a Westview touchdown. He missed a PAT kick and he missed a 31-yard field goal.

The day had a good ending. Jeremiah hit a 25-yard field goal with no time left on the clock to give the Ramona Bulldog junior varsity football team a 17-14 victory and a share of the 2009 Valley League championship.

With four seconds left on the clock, Ramona called a time out to get its field goal team on the field. Westview then called time out to “ice” Jordan. It didn’t work. Jordan drilled the kick through the uprights as time ran out.

The win gave the Bulldogs a school record with nine wins on the junior varsity level. The Dawgs are 9-1 on the season and 5-0 in the Valley League. Oceanside is 4-1. A Bulldog victory tomorrow will give the Dawgs the league championship.

The Bulldogs completed a come from behind victory with a fourth quarter rally. Westview scored first as they took advantage of an interception and took a 7-0 lead in the first period.

Ramona drove for a second period touchdown when Shane Barnes scored on an 8-yard run, but the PAT failed and Westview led 7-6.

The Wolverines added to their lead with a 70-yard touchdown pass in the third period and led 14-6. It was the only big play the Bulldog defense gave up. The Dawg D got big games from nose guard Bolton Lenard, linebackers Steve Rothermel and Derek Harlan, and defensive backs Alec Gahreeb, Marco Sanchez and Mason Erickson.

“We put pressure on them and our defensive backs were in a one-on-one situation for the entire game and did an outstanding job,” said Defensive Back Coach Marc Boykins.

“We got to their QB on several occasions with our backers and line. Their QB didn’t have time to set up and pass,” explained Coach Brent Harvey.

Ramona then scored 11 points in the final 6 minutes to pull out the win. The offensive line started to wear down the bigger Wolverines. Paul Loska, Nick Fitzpatrick, Nick Heimpel, Brandon Barnum, Luke Papps and Andrew Lisowski started clearing the way for Ramona’s stable of running backs.

Kirk Kaliszewski led the backs with 110 yards on 25 carries. Kaliszewski was the workhorse on the game tying drive as he picked up 57 of the 70 yards on the drive.

The key play on the drive was a 12-yard third down pass from Travis Stevens to Dallas Jansen to keep the drive alive. Stevens scored on a 1-yard keeper. Trevor Dotson tied the score with a PAT run and the game was tied at 14.

Ramona’s defense held and the Dawgs got the ball back with 2:20 left in the game. The Dawgs drove to the 15 yard line and Jordan’s kick gave the Dawgs a Valley League crown.

The frosh Bullpups lost to Westview 40-0 on the road.

“Zack White was forced into action when our starting quarterback, Hunter McHargue, could not play,” said Coach Mike Ernst. “Zack earned Player of the Game honors. He is a late addition to our team and he had less than two weeks to learn the quarterback position. I am very proud of the way he responded.”

Westview knew that Ramona was without its passer, so the Wolverines loaded up on the Bullpup running game with nine defensive players in the box to stop the run.

The Bullpups are 2-8 on the season and are 1-4 in Valley League action.
