Ramona High’s girls tennis team received the number four seed in the 2009 Girls Tennis Championship Division II.

The number four seed means that the Lady Dawgs received a bye on Nov. 3 and play the winner of the Scripps Ranch/West Hills first round match at Riviera Oaks Resort and Racquet Club, Ramona’s home courts, on Nov. 4.

The top four seeds in Division II are all from the Valley League. League champ Mt. Carmel is the number one seed, Westview got the two seed and San Marcos got the three seed. All four teams will join the Palomar League next season.

Torrey Pines, Poway and Rancho Bernardo, which will be in the 2010 Palomar League, are all seeded in the top four in the Division I Championships.

The Lady Bulldogs finished the season with a 7-8 record. The Lady Dawgs were 6-6 in the tough Valley League.

After the CIF team championships, Ramona High School will host the Valley League Individuals Tournaments at Riviera Oaks from Nov. 9 through 12. The first rounds of singles action will take place on Monday, Nov. 9. On Tuesday, Nov, 10 (the birthday of the United States Marine Corps), the openings rounds of doubles play will be held.

On Wednesday, Nov. 11 (Veterans Day), the semifinals in singles and doubles play will be held. The champions in singles and doubles action will be crowned on Nov. 12.

The action on all four days will begin at 2 p.m. The public is welcome and there will be a snack bar with a barbecue.

The tourney was originally scheduled for Kit Carson Park in Escondido but the location was changed to Riviera Oaks, which has the finest tennis facilities in North County.

“Word gets around,” said Coach Doug Failla. “When Kit Carson was not available, the tennis coaches decided that Riviera Oaks would be a great venue. Every coach and team that comes here is amazed by the facilities.”

The Lady Bulldog junior varsity tennis team completed a successful season with their biggest win of the season. Coached by Ken Scheib, the team finished with a 13-5 record.

In the season finale, Ramona defeated previously undefeated Del Norte High School 10-8. Ramona took 5 team points in singles play and five in doubles play.

Rebeca Romero won two sets in singles play with scores of 1-6, 6-1 and 6-0. Dayna Lake went 0-6, 6-4 and 6-1 to pick up two team points.

“Taylor Romero’s 6-2 win in singles play was huge. That point cinched at least a tie in the match,” said Coach Failla.

Rachel Vaca and Amy Jordan won two sets in doubles action by going 2-6, 6-4 and 6-1. Ali Gerber and Amy Mazzola picked up a big team point by going 2-6, 5-7 and 6-1.

“Another big key to the win was Laura Meng and Savannah Goodson’s win over their number two doubles team. They were underdogs but pulled off an upset,” said Failla.

Meng and Goodson went 0-6, 6-3 and 6-2.
