Creswell sets 110m hurdles league meet record
Ramona High School senior Lyndon Scott won three events at the Valley League track and field meet while Ramona senior Tyler Creswell set a league meet record in the 110-meter boys hurdles event during the league preliminaries.
The Bulldogs won a total of five events at the league finals, including Scott’s three championships, while qualifying 18 boys entries and 11 girls entries for the CIF preliminary meet Saturday at Mount Carmel High School. Ramona also earned first alternate status for the CIF meet in one boys event and two girls events.
“On the boys side we had a great league finals. We’ve got a lot of guys going into CIF,” said Coach Bob Verhoest.
The league meet preliminaries were held May 12 and the league finals took place May 16, both at Valley Center High School. In the preliminaries Creswell won his 110-meter hurdles heat in 14.72 seconds, erasing the old league meet record of 14.76 seconds.
A Valley Center hurdler edged out Creswell in the finals.
Creswell settled for a second-place time of 14.97 seconds. He is seeded third among hurdlers in CIF Division II schools for the CIF preliminaries.
Creswell also qualified for the CIF meet in the 300-meter hurdles, although his time of 41.89 seconds did not place at the league meet.
Scott won the boys high jump, the long jump, and the triple jump.
“Haven’t seen that in a while,” Verhoest said of obtaining three league meet championships.
Scott cleared 6’5” in the high jump to earn the league championship. His closest competition was his own teammate, Tyler Jordan, who cleared 6’3”. Scott is seeded first among Division II high jumpers for the CIF meet while Jordan is seeded fifth.
Scott’s distance of 21’3” won the long jump, and he will be seeded sixth at the CIF meet. Jordan’s long jump of 21’ 1-1/2” placed third at the league meet and also qualified for the CIF preliminaries.
Scott set a personal record of 44’ 2 1/2” in the triple jump, winning the league meet in the process and earning the second seed at the CIF meet. Jordan will be the first alternate in that event, giving him entry if any CIF Division II triple jumper scratches out of the preliminaries, after totaling 41’ 8 1/4” at the league meet.
A track and field meet closes with the 4x400 relay race, and Ramona ended the day with a win in the league championship event.
The Bulldog boys quartet of Israel Marquez, Tim Wertz, Tanner Jorgenson, and Ryan Morgan posted a season-best time of 3:25.68.
“That was pretty exciting,” Verhoest said.
The 4x400 relay team will be seeded fourth among Division II schools.
Morgan also won the open 400-meter run at the league finals with a time of 49.36 seconds. He will have the third seed for the CIF meet. Wertz also qualified for the CIF meet in the 400-meter run with a time of 51.93 seconds at the league finals.
Morgan’s time of 22.13 seconds in the 200-meter dash placed second at the league meet, and he will be seeded second in the CIF preliminaries. Seth Drake also qualified for the CIF meet in that event with a time of 23.25 seconds.
Although Drake’s time of 11.11 seconds placed second in the 100-meter dash, he will be seeded first among the Division II runners at the CIF meet. Dean Faddis ran the league finals race in 11.37 seconds, qualifying him for the CIF preliminaries.
Ramona’s 4x100 relay team of Faddis, Morgan, Nick Lutu, and Drake opened the league finals with a second-place finish 43.26 seconds after the starting gun was shot. The Bulldogs will be seeded second in Division II.
Logan Peterson threw the discus 132’6” to place second at the league meet and qualify for the CIF meet. Jarred Engler qualified for the CIF preliminaries with a pole vault of 11’9”.
Conner Jenson’s time of 4:31.13 in the 1,600-meter run qualified him for the CIF meet.
Ramona senior Brittany Balcom qualified for the CIF meet in all three girls distance events. Her time of 11:40.27 placed third in the 3,200-meter run, she placed third in the 1,600-meter run at 5:11, and her 800-meter time of 2:20.69 was worth fourth place in the league finals.
In the 3,200-meter run Balcom finished behind her own teammate, as Chelsey Cortez finished second with a time of 11:37.40.
Lauren Cortez also qualified for the CIF meet in the 3,200-meter run.
Ramona freshman Caitlyn Choy qualified for the CIF meet in two events with times of 13.28 seconds in the 100-meter dash and 27.21 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Erika Stinchcomb also qualified in the 200-meter dash, posting a time of 27.27 seconds in the league meet. Stinchcomb is also the first alternate in two other events: the 100-meter dash and the long jump.
Ramona’s girls 4x400 relay team of Evan Escamilla, Sabrina Hernandez, Ruth Spitsbergen, and Kendal Koohler had a season-best time of 4:21.59 to earn entry into the CIF meet.
Koohler also qualified for the CIF meet in the open 400-meter run with a time of 1:02.70. Chelsea Maurer cleared 8’3” in the pole vault to earn a qualifying distance for the CIF meet.
