Adelman selected boys soccer MVP, Defensive Player of Year
Ramona High School senior Trevor Adelman was named the Most Valuable Player for the Bulldogs’ boys soccer team at the team banquet March 1 at Ramona’s Sizzler.
Adelman, a defender, was also selected as the Bulldogs’ Defensive Player of the Year.
“Game in and game out, he’s our most valuable player,” said Coach Michael Jordan. “A college coach is going to love his attitude and athleticism.”
Although no Bulldog players earned first-team Valley League honors, Adelman was a second-team all-league selection.
“Just a tremendous athlete, tremendous heart. He had to play multiple positions for us this year,” Jordan said. “Some of the games he just carried us on his back.”
The banquet also saw Chris Huber and Michael Quilo share Offensive Player of the Year honors, Gerry Magana take home the Impact Player Award, and Eric Brown receive the Coaches’ Award.
The offensive player of the year is usually determined on a point system. Huber and Quilo each entered the final game of the season Feb. 19 with seven goals and three assists. Ramona trailed San Marcos 3-0 in the second half of that game before Huber made a throw-in to Quilo, who scored the Bulldogs’ first goal. Huber then scored on a loose ball to bring Ramona to within one score.
“How can you not award both those guys for consistently being leaders offensively?” Jordan said.
The coaches’ award is selected by the coaching staff.
“The coaches’ award means a lot to me,” Jordan said. “It’s the kind of player that every coach wants on his program, just eager to play at all times.”
Magana, a senior, played midfield for the Bulldogs.
“When Gerry was doing well, our team did well,” Jordan said.
Ramona finished the 2008-09 season with a 6-14-1 overall record, including a 3-9 Valley League mark which placed the Bulldogs fifth among the league’s seven teams.
“I had a great group of guys this year. Whether we won or lost, I had fun,” said Jordan, who took over the boys program for the 2008-09 season after spending nine years as Ramona’s girls coach.
The banquet also gave awards to members of the junior varsity and freshman teams. The junior varsity offensive player of the year was sophomore Danny Diaz, the JV defensive player of the year was sophomore Nate Silva, and the JV coaches’ award went to sophomore Dan Drago. Two freshman team players, Jackson Rath and John Shupe, won coaches’ awards.
In addition, the banquet saw the handing out of certificates that entitle the players to Ramona High School letters.
“Our banquet was great,” Jordan said. “It went really, really well, and it was a nice way to end the year.”
