Ramona wrestlers finish 15th in Masters Meet

Orr, Germain earn third, fourth medals

Eleven Bulldog wrestlers advanced to the Masters Meet and Ramona High School finished 15th in the San Diego Section of the CIF (California Interscholastic Federation). Poway was the section champion. Valley League rivals Mt. Carmel and Westview took, respectively, seventh and tenth.

Senior Brian Orr earned a bronze medal by taking third place in the 189-pound weight class. The CIF champion started the meet on Friday by pinning his Palo Verde opponent in 1:06. Orr then decisioned Matthews from RBV 5-3 to advance to the semifinals on Saturday.

Orr lost to Chace Eskam of Carlsbad in the semis, 6-3. He bounced back in the consolation semifinals to beat Taylor Cox of LCC, 6-3. Orr defeated Matthews for the second time in the tourney, 3-2, to win the match for third place.

CIF champion Brett Germain won the medal for fourth place at the Masters. He started the meet by pinning Eddie Mendoza of Hoover. Germain beat his Santana opponent 8-4 in the second round and decisioned Arturo Meza of West Hills 6-5 in the quarterfinals to advance to the second day of wrestling.

Germain lost in the semifinals in overtime to Jon Kibble of Clairemont. He beat Jesus Ambriz of RBV in the consolation semis 3-1 to advance to the consolation finals and then lost to Endry Meza of West Hills, earning the medal for fourth place.

Brodie Chenowth and Jared Widner advanced to the quarterfinals before being eliminated. Widner (140) beat Shawn Barton of El Capitan 7-0 in the first round. He then beat Jose Carmona of Brawley 8-4 in the second round.

Widner lost to Pisacane of Torrey Pines 10-8 in the quarterfinals. Chenowth (145) pinned Devon Williams of Helix in the first round, then pinned his Poway opponent in the second round, and lost to his Chula Vista opponent 13-11 in the quarterfinals.

Sophomores Spaso Ilich and Marshall Thrasher advanced to the second round of action. Ilich (119) pinned Gabe Uribe of Monte Vista in the first round and lost by decision to his Escondido opponent in the round. Thrasher (heavyweight) beat Pat Sullivan of Gujome Park Academy by decision in the first round and lost by fall to his Calexico opponent in the second round.

Eddie Delgado (112), Sean Conroy (125), Waldo Saldivar (130), Devin Rhodes (160) and Logan Pierce also wrestled in the Masters Meet and were eliminated in the first round.

“This was a very young team that benefited greatly from the leadership of our senior wrestlers,” said Coach Steve Koch. “If the returning wrestlers learn from the example set by our seniors, we will be very successful next season. Brett and Brian finished their high school careers in grand fashion by earning medals at the Masters. I am proud of them and the entire team.”
