Only in Ramona

It had to happen eventually. Ramona has another honorary mayor, Sharon Davis. Prior to her it was another Sharon, Sharon Quisenberry. Perhaps Ramona’s most famous winner of the honorary mayor contest, Tony Lama Llama (a llama), who walked around on four legs instead of two (a true “Only in Ramona” moment). How times have changed. From the looks of the money (votes) counted, well over $24,000; the race for this year’s honorary mayor was taken very seriously by some of the contestants, especially our winner, Sharon Davis, whose campaign raised over $17,000, more than six times that of the closest competitor and about twice as much as all of the other contestants combined. The money raised will be utilized by the Town Hall for day to day expenses and to help with more restoration. Although there were some rumblings around town that the focus seemed more about the recognition of the individuals than raising money for Town Hall, you can not argue about the outcome. I applaud all of the contestants and thought it was a great idea to bring the contest back.

Congrats also go to the organizers of the Ramona Junior Fair for a very tasty barbecue and pie auction that raised over $12,000. This Saturday is “Rockin’ The Kasbah,” a fundraiser for the Intermountain Fire and Rescue Department; Saturday the 25th kicks off the Ramona Junior Fair, and at the end of the month we have the Ramona Country Fair. When it comes to fundraisers and events, Ramonans really step up to the plate with their support, even when times are tough. As the chamber’s new slogan indicates, Ramona, “The Heart of San Diego,” not only applies to the physical location of Ramona, but to its residents as well.
