Passing league opens season

Ramona High School’s varsity and junior varsity teams opened their summer passing schedule at the Dawg Pound hosting Temescal Canyon High School last Tuesday and San Pasqual High School on Thursday.

Only the varsity participated in the scrimmage against Temescal Canyon. The scrimmage started out with the alternating positions. Each team played 20 minutes of offense and then switched to defense. Both squads had the ball twice.

In that segment of the scrimmage, Ramona outscored the Titans eight touchdowns to four. Erik Ernst hit Seth Drake for two scores. Ernst also connected with Tyler Jackson and Kyler Fitting for scores. Ian Hunt hooked up with Quincy Watts for a score.

Trevor Kerchner, Jake Graham and Watts scored on intercepted passes.

In the second half of the scrimmage, the teams played using rules closer to real football. If a team’s offense was stopped, the other team took over possession of the ball.

Temescal Canyon scored on an interception on Ramona’s first offensive possession. The Titans then scored on their possession.

Ramona tossed another interception. The defense took over the tone of the scrimmage. The Dawg defense recorded four stops and scored on a Kerchner interception.

The offense came alive as Ian Hunt recorded a scoring toss to Kerchner. Rocco Hemphill drove the team 70 yards on two plays hitting Kerchner with a long toss to set up a fitting TD. Ernst hit Drake for the final score of the night.

“We were a little rusty. It was the first time that we went against another team. We had too many drops and our quarterbacks were a little late on their reads and throws,” said Coach Damon Baldwin.

Coach Ed Munyer was pleased with the work of the linebackers and secondary but sees “room for improvement.”

The varsity and junior varsity hosted the Golden Eagles of San Pasqual High School. The squads used format similar to the one used against Temescal Canyon.

The Dawgs started out hot. They shut down the Eagles on their first defensive stint, then scored four touchdowns on its first offensive series. Ernst hit Kwayde Miller, Kerchner and Drake with scoring tosses. Hunt hit Watts for a TD. San Pasqual did score on an interception.

Ernst finished the scrimmage hitting Tyler Jackson and Drake with scoring passes. Hunt hit Fitting for the final score.

“We started out well but lost our intensity on defense,” said Munyer. “We got away from doing what we like to do and we played their game. We did well but we have to play our game to succeed.”

“Overall we had a good week,” said Baldwin. “We have some adjustments to make and some decisions to make. I am pleased with the competition and the hard work we have done so far.”
