Let Freedom Ring

Share

Independence means freedom of choice, freedom of speech and expression, freedom of religion. We need to be

more

independent and less dependent in a lot of different areas. But it also means we can choose to be dependent as well. The dictionary defines

Independence

as:

freedom from the control, influence, support or help of another; Freedom: state or condition of being free, not being under another’s control.

So as we Ramonans struggle with our current economic situation and the fallout that impacts every one of us, every day, like water rationing, limited transit service, TIF fees that limit new business opportunities, what to do about Highway 67, do we want another big box store and where, land development issues, to be a city or not, how do we make Ramona more of a destination versus a drive through, just to mention a few; as we have our independence we are also very dependent on one another. As we get ready to celebrate our Independence Day, let us not forget about those who are still trying to obtain their freedom and celebrate independence.

With most holidays that we observe, getting a day off work and attending family or community celebrations are what is important as opposed to the origin or historical event that created it in the first place. But since we have our freedom and independence, we can choose to celebrate however we want with parades, picnics, baseball, and fireworks! Alice Cooper sang it best,

“Freedom, we’re gonna ring the bell. Freedom to rock, Freedom to talk. Freedom to raise your fist and yell!”
