Cagers come from behind to win two games
The Ramona Bulldog basketball team used the same formula to win two games. The Dawgs came from behind to defeat Orange Glen in a Valley League tilt, and they came from behind to beat Santana in non-league action.
In both games, the Bulldogs won the fourth quarter to win the game. In both games, players came off the bench to give the Dawgs a boost. In both games, the crowd got into the game and supported the Dawgs. Coach Ken Scheib’s cagers are now 12-6 on the year and are 2-1 in Valley League play.
The Dawgs defeated Orange Glen High School in the Dawg House 54-52. Cameron Kolk recorded a double as the senior post player grabbed 11 rebounds and scored 13 points.
The Dawgs were cold from three-point land hitting only four of 16 attempts. Orange Glen put extra pressure on Dodge McIntosh and Andrew Alcaraz to take away the Bulldogs outside attack. So the Dawgs pounded the ball inside and used their half court offense.
McIntosh led Ramona with 17 points. He grabbed eight rebounds. The Patriots Feras Tartir led all scorers with 31 points, but Ramona held the rest of the Patriots to single digits in the scoring column.
Alcaraz (8), Zach Windes (6), Josh Leiber (6) and Bryson Garcia (2) all scored in the win.
Windes, Leiber and Garcia all came off the bench to play important roles in the win. Windes hit two big three-point shots, Leiber scored six points and helped up the tempo of the game and Garcia grabbed key rebounds and was a presence in the paint.
Ramona had to rally to beat Santana High School 82-77 in the Dawg House before a loud and spirited crowd. The Dawgs trailed the Sultans until 6:55 in the fourth period as the Dawgs outscored Santana 26-15 in the final eight minutes to earn the victory.
Ramona started slowly and trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half, but rallied to trail 36-30 at intermission. The Dawgs played Orange Glen evenly in the third period and took charge of the game in the final period..
“Keith Scheib had his best game of the season. He broke their press and had two big steals in the fourth period,” stated Assistant Coach Dan Marshall.
“Bryson Garcia came off of the bench and was a key in our press in the second half,” said Assistant Coach Jim Root.
“Garcia, Leiber and Windes have been doing a good job of coming into games and playing important roles all season. They all contributed big time tonight,” said Scheib.
Garcia had six rebounds in the second half and was a force on defense. Windes hit two key three-pointers. Leiber also hit clutch three-point baskets.
McIntosh led all scorers with 24 points. The senior captain scored 22 points in the second half.
Ramona hit 14 of 32 three-point shots. The key factor in the win was the Bulldogs shooting from the foul line. Ramona hit 20 of 27 free throws. The Dawgs scored 14 points from the charity stripe in the fourth period. Santana only could convert on four of 14 free throws.
Alcaraz scored 16 points and had four assists and two steals. Jared Engler scored eight points and had three steals. Scheib scored 11 points to go with his three steals (two were in the fourth period) and four assists. Kwayde Miller scored five points. Kolk scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds.
Junior varsity
Coach Joe Engler’s junior varsity is on a roll. The JVs have won three in a row and have won six of their last eight games.
After a loss to Mt. Carmel to open Valley League play Ramona has won three straight. The Dawgs beat previously undefeated Oceanside 64-62 on the road. Sean Leahy led the Dawgs in scoring with 16 points. Nathan Hunt (15) and Jordan Wylie (11) also scored in double figures. Coach Engler had praise for Chris Durham wh grabbed eight rebounds and Adam Watson for his excellent play on defense.
The junior varsity beat Orange Glen 66-50. Hunt led the team with 17 points. Garrett Adelman scored 11 points. Sean Jennings (8), Adam Watson (9), Sean Leahy (9), Jordan Wylie (3), Tanner Long (2) and Chris Long (5) also scored in the win. Engler also had praise for the defensive play of Bobby Gaede and the rebounding of Adam Watson (8).
Garrett Adelman put on a shooting clinic in the Dawg House against Santana High School. Adelman hit five three point baskets for 15 points. Nathan Hunt led all scorers with 18 points. Watson (10), Travis Stevens (8), Sean Jennings (4), Wylie (4), Gaede (2) and Long (3) also scored.
