Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man for auto theft and a parole violation after he led them on a high-speed chase from state Route 67 and Pala Street in Ramona to El Cajon Monday night. The sheriff’s report of the incident did not release the man’s name.

According to Deputy Scott Bligh, the pursuit began when Deputy Coury Martinez observed a Dodge pickup passing through the Route 67/Pala intersection at a high rate of speed. Martinez attempted to make a traffic enforcement stop, but, due to the suspect’s speed, the deputy lost visual contact. A sheriff’s helicopter was nearby and the truck was seen continuing southbound on Route 67, Bligh reported.

As the truck entered Lakeside, sheriff’s deputies and California Highway Patrol officers, staged at the Circle K at Route 67 and Willow Road, attempted to stop the truck. The truck, which officers determined was stolen, failed to yield, left Route 67 and continued on Lakeside surface streets. The suspect returned to southbound Route 67 and into El Cajon, where El Cajon police joined the pursuit. Authorities called off the pursuit due to the erratic driving of the suspect and the danger to other drivers and pedestrians, reported Bligh.

The sheriff’s helicopter continued observing the truck and saw the driver abandon the vehicle and run into a trailer near E. Lexington Avenue and S. Second Street in El Cajon. Officers from the helicopter directed ground officers to the location, and the suspect was arrested.
