J.C. Andrews, winner of the 2008 Mojave Desert Racing Superstition Series, will be honored at an Awards Banquet at the Santa Ysabel Casino from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Competing in a field of 225 trucks and off road vehicles, Andrews compiled a near perfect record winning all but one race in a five-race 1,100-mile race season.
Andrews credits his win to a combination of good driving, race preparation, and vehicle design and construction.
“Racing in MDR is brutal,” Andrews said. “Trucks take a pounding in the off-road desert courses.” “In a given race, only half the vehicles finish.”
“I drive a Ford Ranger built by Rodd Fantelli of Ramona,” Andrews said. “It is one tough truck.”
At the awards ceremony, Andrews thanked his race mechanic and co-driver, Jack Doherty of JackFab in El Cajon.
He also acknowledged members of his race team: Ted Quirino of Ramona and Aaron Reynard of San Diego, as well as his equipment sponsors: Bilstein (racing shocks) of Poway, Deaver Springs (suspension) of Santa Ana, and VisionX (off road lighting) of Scottsdale, Ariz.
Andrews plans to use his prize money to repair and upgrade his truck.
“It will take two to three weeks to get ready for the first race of the 2009 season,” Andrews said.
