Cagers start league with winning record

Ramona High’s boys varsity basketball team will enter Valley League play with a winning record and some impressive statistics.

The Dawgs are 9-5 in pre-league tournament play. They also lead the San Diego Section CIF in three-point goals, and they are in the top five in California in three-point goals and in the top 10 in the nation, according to stats posted on Maxpreps.com. The Dawgs are averaging 9.2 treys per game.

Coach Ken Scheib’s Dawgs finished pre-league play by going 2-2 in the Chula Vista Spartan Classic. The Bulldogs opened the Spartan Classic with a 75-50 win over Castle Park High School. The game was close in the early going as Ramona led 18-17 at the end of the first period. The Dawgs put the game away in the second quarter with a 25-13 period and led 43-39 at intermission. They then cruised to a victory.

Dodge McIntosh led all scorers with 25 points. The senior captain hit seven three-pointers. Josh Leiber registered double figures with 12 points, four from beyond the arch.

Alcaraz (9), Jared Engler (7), Keith Scheib (3), Zach Windes (3), Garland Marshall (1), Bryson Garcia (4), Tyler Jordan (2) and Cameron Kolk (9) also scored in the win. Kolk led all rebounders with eight boards.

Ramona lost to Helix in the second round 60-49. The Dawgs led 26-25 at intermission, but Helix had an 18-9 run in the third period to put the game away. McIntosh scored 25 points and hit five treys. Kolk grabbed 10 rebounds. Alcaraz (3), Engler (3), Windes (5), Leiber (6), Garcia (7) and Kolk (2) also scored in the game

Ramona rallied for 17 fourth-quarter points in a 61-59 come-from-behind win over Mater Dei High School in Chula Vista.

McIntosh and Alcaraz scored in double figures in the victory. McIntosh scored 16 points and Alcaraz registered 13 points. McIntosh hit four three-point goals and Alcaraz hit three treys. Kolk grabbed a game high 16 rebounds and scored 8 points. Engler (2), Windes (3), Scheib (5), Leiber (6) and Garcia (8) also scored in the win. Engler grabbed seven boards and Garcia and Alcaraz had five boards apiece.

The Bulldogs finished their pre-league games with a 78-63 loss to Southwest High School. Engler (14), Kolk (15) and McIntosh (19) all scored in double figures. Kolk recorded a double double by grabbing 12 rebounds. McIntosh sunk five three-point shots. Mcintosh was named to the All Spartan Classic tournament team.
