Boys basketball beats Knights at home 72-57
Ramona Bulldogs varsity boys basketball players ended the regular season and Valley League play with one of their biggest wins of the year.
The Dawgs beat San Marcos High School 72-57 in the Dawg House on Senior Night on Friday, avenging a 59-42 loss on the road in the first round of league play. Ramona finished the regular season with a 15-12 record and ended in fourth place in the Valley League with a 5-7 record.
Ramona took an 8-6 lead early in the first period and never relinquished the lead.
“Coach Jim Root did a great job on the scouting report and came up with a game plan that caught San Marcos off guard, said Coach Ken Scheib. “Coach Root noticed a player that didn’t shoot much, so we didn’t guard him and that gave us an extra man to rebound.”
The ploy neutralized San Marcos’ superior height and allowed the Bulldogs to out-rebound the Knights.
The Dawgs stretched the Knights’ defense by hitting eight three-point goals.
Andrew Alcaraz started the game by hitting three treys in the first four minutes. Dodge McIntosh then took over the long range shots and hit four threes. Jared Engler also hit a three-pointer.
The Dawgs were cold from the free throw line in the first three periods hitting only 11 of 20 from the charity stripe. The Dawgs put the game out of reach by hitting 13 free throws in the final 2:41 after San Marcos cut the Dawg lead to seven.
McIntosh led all scorers with 27 points. Alcaraz scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Engler also tallied in double figures with 11 points. Zach Windes (2), Keith Scheib (2), Josh Lieber (6), Kwayde Miller (3) and Cameron Kolk (4) all scored in the win.
Ramona lost to Westview on the road earlier last week 74-60. Engler led the Dawgs with 13 points. Alcaraz and Kolk also scored in double figures with 12 points apiece. Windes (5), McIntosh (5) and Miller (2) also scored in the game.
“We played poorly against Westview and the team decided that they would not let the seniors lose their last game in the Dawgs House,” said Assistant Coach Dan Marshall. “The underclassmen practice well and hard on Wednesday and Thursday and it paid off. Dodge and Cameron went out winners on Friday Night.”
The Dawgs received the 13th seed in the CIF playoffs and traveled to Steele Canyon on Wednesday for the opening round of the playoffs.
