Lady cagers beat San Marcos
The Lady Bulldogs beat San Marcos on the road and lost a showdown with Mt. Carmel in the Dawg House as the Valley League season moved into the final round of league play.
The loss to Mt. Carmel puts the Lady Bulldogs three games behind the Sundevils with five games left in league action.
“We played well,” Coach Dan Marshall said after his team dropped a 68-62 decision to Mt. Carmel in the Dawg House. “I am proud of the way we played and I am proud of my team. They just beat us. They may be a better team than we are now, but we might get to play them in the playoffs and I like our chances.
“I told the team that I would give them Saturday off if we won. I gave them Saturday off. We played well and we played like winners.”
The Lady Dawgs got off to a fast start and led 17-9 at the end of the first period. They led 31-24 at intermission.
“We played very well on defense and our inside game was working on offense,” explained Marshall.
The Lady Dawgs also out-rebounded the Sundevils in the first 16 minutes.
Ramona played a very physical defensive game and as a result the Lady Dawgs were called for 24 fouls giving Mt. Carmel 34 shots from the free throw line. The Sundevils hit 20 of those charity shots. The Sundevils were called for 14 fouls. Ramona hit nine of 21 shots from the charity stripe.
Three Lady Bulldog starters fouled out of the game.
Kellie Schoepp led the Lady Dawgs in scoring with 18 points. She also grabbed seven boards. Janet Nasman scored 14 points and had eight rebounds. Linze Cole hit four three-points shots for 12 points. Chelsea Maurer scored 10 points.
Cole, Paige Conroy and Maurer all had three steals apiece on defense. Kathryn Owens scored eight points and grabbed seven points.
The Lady Dawgs’ 47-26 victory over San Marcos did little to get them prepared for their showdown with Mt. Carmel.
“The game was not a contest,” said Marshall. “We substituted liberally and everybody got a chance to play. Our second team got more minutes than our first team in the last three periods.”
Ramona took a 13-3 lead after the first eight minutes. The Lady Dawgs held the Knights to one field goal in each of the first two periods to lead 31-5 at intermission.
The Lady Dawgs completely controlled the boards. Schoepp had more rebounds in limited action than the entire San Marcos team. She grabbed 10 boards. Nasman had five rebounds and Conroy had four.
Every member of the team played and contributed to the win. Tori Sheppard (4), Jessica Beam (1), Conroy (3), Felisha Stead (7), Morgan Gross (2), Cole (5), Owens (2), Kayla Lawler (4), Maurer (7) and Nasman (9) scored in the win. Christie Flores and Tess Balcom played well on defense and grabbed several rebounds.
The Lady Dawgs are now 13-6 overall and are 4-3 in the Valley League.
Junior varsity
The junior varsity beat San Marcos 53-29 and lost to Mt. Carmel 42-30 in Valley League action. The loss to Mt. Carmel was the team’s first loss of the season. Their record is 9-1 overall and they are 6-1 in the Valley League. Despite the loss, the Lady Dawgs remain in first place in league action.
Kim Whelehon (18), RaeAnn Vantol (14) and Lindsey Spieker (13) scored in double figures against San Marcos. Megan Buckley (2), Ciara Swier(1), Morgan Gunderson (3) and Courtney Robinson also scored for the Lady Dawgs.
Whelehon led Ramona in scoring against Mt. Carmel with 11 points. Spieker (9), Buckley (3), Swier (4) and Robinson (6) also scored for Ramona.
