Grapplers beat Valley Center on the road

Ramona’s wrestlers beat Valley Center 59-15 on the road in Valley League action.

Valley Center forfeited six bouts in last Thursday’s contest. Jared Widner, Spaso Ilich, Logan Pierce, Brian Orr and Brett Germain all scored six team points for the Dawgs by receiving forfeits.

Sean Conroy (125), Waldo Saldivar (130) Brodie Chenowth (160) and Marshal Thrasher (277) all won by fall. Thrasher’s win was the most impressive bout of the match. Thrasher weighed in at 203 pounds. His opponent, Josh Bergman, tipped the scales at 277 pounds.

Despite giving up 74 pounds, Thrasher dominated the bout. He led 9-0 after the first period and pinned Bergman 29 seconds into the second period.

Chenowth also wrestled up two weight classes to pin Pedro Flores. Chenowth usually wrestles at 145 but took the 160 bout against Valley Center.

Max Hughes (135) beat Zach Siemer by technical fall posting a 17-2 win. Lorenzo Lizotte moved up from the junior varsity and lost by fall 1-3 in the bout. Connor Koch moved up from 103 to 112 and lost to Eric Collin by decision. Marcos Herrera also moved up from the junior varsity and lost by fall to Daniel Collin in the 140 bout.

“It is disappointing when our guys work hard all week and we show up and the other team doesn’t fill every weight for the match,” said Coach Steve Koch. “We have improved every week, and every wrestler has put in a solid effort to help the team improve. I am proud of our strong veteran leadership and our core group of young studs.”

Koch’s Bulldogs took fourth place at the San Pasqual Invitational Tournament. Rancho Bernardo won the tourney, Steele Canyon took second and Mt. Carmel took third place. RB is the third ranked team in the county. Steele Canyon is the fifth ranked team and Mt. Carmel is the seventh ranked team in the county.

Orr won the tournament in the 189-pound division to win a gold medal. Ilich (119) and Chenowth (145) won silver medals for taking second place in the tournament. Koch (103) and Widner (140) won bronze medals for taking third place in the tournament. Conroy (125), Pierce (171) and Germain (215) took fifth place in the tourney.

The junior varsity won the Eastlake Dual Tournament by going 5-0 . The JV/Frosh have a combined record of 16-4 in dual meets and tournaments.
