Girls basketball team gearing up for season

Ramona High’s varsity girls basketball team had a rough time playing without the services of senior leader Kellie Schoepp, who had to sit out several games with a knee injury.

The Lady Dawgs slipped to 6-7 in tournament and non-league play, but Schoepp is back and the team is improving against tough competition.

Ramona lost a hard-fought contest to Steele Canyon 45-43 in a non-league game. RaeAnne Van Tol had a monster game in the paint as she hauled in an amazing 17 rebounds. Van Tol also scored 9 points.

Felisha Stead led the Lady Dawgs with 10 points. She hit two 3-point goals. Tessa Balcom hit two 3-pointers and scored 9 points. Paige Conroy scored 6 points. Christie Flores contributed 7 points and Courtney Robinson scored 2 points.

The Lady Bulldogs lost the opening game of the Kiwanis Tournament to James Logan High School of Union City 48-28.

Balcom led in scoring with 11 points. She hit three 3-point shots. Conroy scored 9 points, all from beyond the arch. Flores scored 2 points and grabbed six rebounds. Van Tol scored 6 points. Robinson grabbed seven rebounds.

Schoepp returned to action against Santana High School in the second game of the Kiwanis tournament and Ramona got back in the victory column. Schoepp turned in a double double in a 50-41 win over Santana High School. She scored a game high 18 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and hit a 3-point goal.

Balcom hit three 3’s to score 9 points. Tori Sheppard (2), Conroy (9 with one 3-pointer) Stead (2), Van Tol (4), Robinson (4) and Flores (2) also scored in the tourney win. Van Tol and Stead hauled in four rebounds apiece.

The Lady Bulldogs will finish the Kiwanis Tournament and then open Valley League play at home against defending champion Mt. Carmel on Jan. 6.
