Ramona High School’s girls water polo team traveled to Santana High School for a Dec. 8 game, but the Sultans captured an 11-9 victory.

“It was a good game,” said Ramona coach Donnie Williams. “It kind of went back and forth.”

The Bulldogs led 6-5 at halftime and 8-7 after three periods.

The Sultans scored the first goal of the fourth quarter and the Bulldogs then went ahead before Santana scored the game’s final three goals.

“We took some good shots,” Williams said.

The tying goal came with two minutes remaining in the fourth period while the Sultans scored the winning goal with 15 seconds left after one of Santana’s players was unguarded in the middle of the pool.

“We can’t make these type of defensive breakdowns,” Williams said.

Angelina Uriostegui and Taylor Shinnick scored four goals apiece for the Bulldogs while Amanda Carasiti had Ramona’s other goal.

Ramona only incurred two 20-second exclusion penalties and stopped the Sultans on one of their extra-player advantages.

Ramona’s only extra-player situation ended without the Bulldogs taking a shot.

The loss gave Ramona a 2-4 overall record for the 2009-10 season.
