The Ramona Bulldog boys varsity basketball team opened its season with a 66-34 win over Mar Vista High school in the Dawg House.

Three Bulldogs scored in double figures against the Mariners. Andrew Alcaraz and Keith Scheib shared scoring honors as both seniors contributed 11 points to the victory with one 3-pointer. Bryson Garcia scored 10 points and led all rebounders with six boards. He blocked one shot.

Alcaraz played well on defense, too. He had four steals and blocked two shots. Scheib had three assists and sunk one trey.

Josh Lieber hit two 3-pointers and ended the evening with 8 points. Jared Engler scored 8 points and grabbed four rebounds.

Garlan Marshall scored 5 points and hit one 3-point goal. Zach Windes scored 5 points and also hit a 3-point shot. Adam Watson (4), Quintin Wright (2) and Jake Wolf (2) also scored in the victory.

“I was very impressed and happy with the unselfishness that the team displayed,” said Ken Scheib, head coach for Ramona. “On offense we hit the open man and we were patient when we ran the offense.

“Bryson Garcia was a force in the middle. He scored our first 6 points and controlled the boards at both ends of the court. It was also great that everybody got a chance to play and contribute to our win in our first home game.”

“We installed a new defense and we ran it very well for a first game,” said Dan Marshall, assistant coach and the defensive coordinator. “Keith Scheib did a nice job of running the offense and directing the defense.”

The Dawgs will now get into the tournament mode as they will play in three tournaments before they enter Valley League action after the school district’s winter break. The Dawgs will travel to Imperial Valley, Mar Vista and Chula Vista for tournaments.
