Ramona Boys and Girls Club’s annual Recreational Basketball League starts Saturday, Dec. 12, with the youth of Ramona competing in the winter league each Saturday.

The league will run until Feb. 20. The week of Feb. 20 through 27 will be devoted to a tournament. Each team will face double elimination in the tournament and a tournament champion in each division will be crowned on Saturday, Feb. 27.

The league consists of boys and girls from third grade through eighth grade. They are separated in divisions by age.

There is a Boys League, which consists of three divisions, and there are two divisions in the Girls League. Teams range from seven to nine players.

“All of the children have a wonderful time in the league,” said Bob Doucette, sports coordinator for the Ramona Boys and Girls Club. “They all have a chance to stay active during the colder winter months when there are generally less activities. They enjoy the exercise, sportsmanship, learn game skills, and develop friendships with each other.”

The games will be played in two gymnasiums, the Olive Piece Middle School Gym on the Olive Pierce school campus, and the Wilson Gym next to the Ramona Unified School District offices on Ninth Street.

Games will be played from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and are open to the public. The events are free to attend.

“So if you would like to see our local youth competitions, please stop by and you will be rewarded by being able to witness some pretty amazing play from boys and girls that have a passion for the game,” said Doucette. “This is the level where athletes start, where they play from the heart, with a desire to compete for the love of the game.”
