My Favorite Things

As the song goes, “these are a few of my favorite things” about the holidays. There’s nothing better than leftover turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and let’s not forget the gravy. After all of the cooking and sharing with family, it just seems to taste better the day after—and then later in the week: turkey tacos, turkey sandwiches...you get the picture.

Another of my favorite things is rain, besides the fact we need it (and it usually means snow in the mountains), I really enjoy a wintery rainy day when the air is cool and you can have a fire in the fireplace. And after 164 days without any measurable rain, last Saturday was great.

Picking out the family Christmas tree (fresh cut, not artificial) is also a highlight. Deciding how big, what variety; the scent of fresh pine in the house is a constant reminder of the holidays. Other things I enjoy are the holiday parties, get-togethers with family and friends and the holiday decorations you see throughout the county. The holidays are also about our local community events like the annual Christmas Tree Lighting with Santa featuring our local children’s choirs singing Christmas carols this Saturday at the Ramona Outdoor Community Center, and the Hometown Christmas Concert with the Ramona Town Hall Brass Band at the Ramona Mainstage on the 19th, to mention just a few. Plus all of the opportunities to give, whether it be clothing or non-perishable food goods to benefit the Ramona Food and Clothes Closet, the annual Toys for Tots drive at the Ramona Airport (Saturday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), the Salvation Army bell ringers or just volunteering to make someone’s life a little better. Regardless of what is happening in our everyday lives, the holiday spirit brings out the best in people.
