Garden Club caters to all shades of green
Fall is right around the corner, and clubs and organizations are gearing up for another season.
There are plenty of ways to get active and involved in this growing community that used to be a “little” quiet town. Though the town is not so quiet any longer, the people are just as friendly. From volunteering organizations to courses in crafts, animals or books, there is certainly something for everyone.
This will be the first in a series of articles about what is available in Ramona. Though not exhaustive, it will give newcomers an idea of where to start to get involved.
There are clubs for kids as well as adults. Since a new planting season is rolling around, the Ramona Garden Club will be the focus here.
The club offers talks, tours and assistance through its members in planning, planting and maintaining different types of gardens in this high desert climate. Members range from designers and landscapers to “just” hobbyists and non-gardeners seeking answers to questions about backyard gardens.
The Ramona Garden Club has events in September of interest to the green thumbs out there—or, those desiring to be.
Garden club meetings are held the second Wednesday of the month. Though held in the Woman’s Club clubhouse at 524 Main St., men are invited to join the group as well.
At the Sept. 9 meeting, Master Gardener Greg Rubin from California’s Own Landscape Design Inc. will focus on water-wise gardening. The talk will focus on water wise gardening. “We feel so fortunate to get Greg Rubin as our next speaker,” said Georgie Suitor, club president. “He is so knowledgeable and has a lot of experience with drought gardening. With the water rationing the way it is right now, everyone is tearing out their yards. He is going to give us a lot of ideas on what to do with space besides putting in (or trying to maintain) the grass.”
The public is welcome to attend the club’s meeting and take advantage of the question and answer period after Rubin’s talk.
The garden club’s major annual fundraiser in 2010 will be the garden tour, but with an added twist. This year, the club is teaming up with the Olde Ramona Hotel Gallery to exhibit artist’s paintings in the tour homes.
“It is going to be fun to have them involved with our tour at the same time,” said Suitor.
To take advantage of this group’s expertise and time, the following information is provided for the upcoming meetings and events:
• Sept. 2 and 16, 8–10 a.m., Herb Garden walk at the Wild Animal Park.
• Sept. 9, noon to 2 p.m., general meeting with Greg Rubin.
• Sept. 14, 6 to 8:30 p.m., San Diego Horticultural meeting.
• Sept. 11and 25, 9 a.m. to noon, Collier Park water-wise garden.
