Power shut-off plan remains in air

The status of San Diego Gas & Electric’s plan to shut off power during high-risk weather conditions is still up in the air—even after the long-awaited ruling from the California Public Utilities Commission (PUC) on Tuesday, because the commissioner and the administrative law judge assigned to the case do not agree.

The proposed decision by Commissioner Timothy Simon authorizes SDG&E to implement the shut-off plan on a pilot basis with numerous conditions. However, the alternate proposed decision by Judge Timothy Kenney denies SDG&E’s application to do so.

Therefore, it will be up to the full commission to make the decision, probably at its next meeting on Sept. 10. In the meantime, the PUC will accept comments on these decisions for the next 30 days.
