Ashley Shields, three-sport athlete

Share

Ashley Shields has it together. She is a three-sport athlete and she has found a way to not only play those sports and play them well, but she has found a way to make money during the summer and keep in shape for her senior year.

Ashley has earned three letters in tennis, three in track and two in water polo. She truly works at those sports in the summer. By the time she finishes at RHS, she will have more letters than the Hawaiian alphabet. Her favorite sport is tennis.

Ashley has three summer jobs. Ashley gives tennis lessons from 8 a.m. until noon and from 7 to 8 p.m. five days a week to young tennis players. She also gives swimming lessons to youngsters during the week.

On weekends she is a lifeguard. Talk about mixing business with pleasure!

To stay in shape and improve her games, Ashley works out in the gym. She hits balls off the ball machine and tries to play tennis every day, but she says with a smile that she usually only gets to play five days a week. As a matter of fact, Ashley always has a smile. Most people with her schedule would be too tired to smile.

In her spare time (what spare time?) she enjoys going to the movies and going to the beach with friends.

She doesn’t take summer school. They don’t have classes after 8 p.m. But when she does go to school, she is a 4.3 student in college prep, honors and advanced placement classes.

She is considering going to Northern Arizona University or UC Irvine. She is undecided on a major. She is considering being an orthodontist or a career in business management. With her schedule she could teach a course in business management and time management.

Ashley definitely wants to play tennis in college. She will be able to find the time.
