Girls beat Grossmont, Orange Glen in swim

Ramona High School’s girls swim team defeated Grossmont in an April 2 non-league dual meet at Ramona and prevailed over Orange Glen in an April 3 Valley League competition in Escondido.

The 98-72 win over Grossmont and the 139-26 triumph over Orange Glen gives the Bulldogs a 1-1 record in Valley League dual meets and a 4-1 overall record in dual meets.

Ramona won nine of eleven events against Grossmont.

“It was kind of cold, but they did pretty good,” said Coach Stacey Dusseault.

Dusseault let her swimmers compete in events other than their regular races against the Foothillers. She split her relay teams, allowing Grossmont to win the 400-meter freestyle relay but also providing Ramona’s Kaylee Nelson with her first varsity win as part of the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Breann Stevens, Taylor Shinnick, Nelson and Lauren Gantzer had a time of 1:49.24 while Ramona’s 200-yard medley relay team of Stevens, Madi Lanz, Katherine Abbott and Gantzer won their race in 2:00.75.

Grossmont’s other win was in the 100-yard backstroke. Two of Ramona’s winners obtained new automatic qualifying times for the CIF meet: Abbott swam the 500-yard freestyle in 5:31.96 and Stevens took 2:20.42 in the 200-yard individual medley.

Abbott also won the 200-yard freestyle race in 2:02.40, a new CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) consideration time, and Ellie Carrano also earned a consideration time in the 200-yard freestyle. Gantzer won the 100-yard butterfly with a CIF consideration time of 1:06.41 while Shinnick also obtained a consideration time in that race.

Lanz earned CIF consideration times while winning two individual events, taking the 100-yard freestyle in 57.79 seconds and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:16.82. Shinnick won the 50-yard freestyle race in 27.63 seconds.

Ramona’s swimmer of the meet against Grossmont was sophomore Sydney Davison, who obtained personal bests with times of 2:36 in the 200-yard individual medley and 6:15 in the 500-yard freestyle. Her 500-yard freestyle time was 15.6 seconds faster than her previous personal best.

“I was real happy with the two best times for her,” Dusseault said.

In a dual meet, each team fields up to three swimmers in individual events. The winner earns six points for the team, four points are awarded for second place, third place is worth three points, fourth place gives the team two points, and the team with the firth-place swimmer receives one point.

Each school can enter two relay teams with the first-place finisher receiving eight points, the second-place relay team earning four points, and the third-place quartet adding two points. Thus if no divers compete a perfect score is 140 points, and Orange Glen kept Ramona from such an accomplishment only with a third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle.

“We came really close,” Dusseault said.

Dusseault knew Orange Glen didn’t have a strong team, so she split the Bulldogs into two squads.

“We tried to make the best of it,” she said.

Dusseault let captains Gantzer and Autie Hillis provide the lineups for each race, and Gantzer’s Sharks competed against Hillis’ Studmuffins.

“It made it a lot more fun for our girls,” Dusseault said. “They really enjoyed it.”

The Studmuffins won by a single point.

Ramona’s winners included Brice Maruna, who swam the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:24.50. Maruna underwent surgery for a torn shoulder ligament in January and did not return to competition until the Grossmont meet.

“She’s mainly been kicking in the water,” Dusseault said.

Maruna began her competitive rehabilitation with the 50-yard freestyle race against Grossmont. She competed in the 100-yard breaststroke and one relay competition against Orange Glen.

Hillis and Gantzer each won one individual event. Hillis took the 100-yard backstroke in 1:07.44 and Gantzer earned first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.44 seconds.

Stevens and Lanz each won two events. Stevens had times of 55.25 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle and 2:00.72 in the 200-yard freestyle. Lanz swam the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.25 and the 200-yard individual medley in 2:26.50.

Shinnick had the top time in the 500-yard freestyle race, taking 5:42.00 to complete the 20 laps. Ramona’s 200-yard medley relay team of Jessica Patterson, Chelsi Lane, Abbott, and Gantzer won their race in 2:10.72, the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Carrano, Shinnick, Hillis, and Stevens won with a time of 1:44.60, and the winning 400-yard freestyle relay squad of Davison, Heidi Hartwell, Shinnick, and Stevens posted a time of 4:09.41.

Carrano was named the swimmer of the meet for a personal best of 26.1 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle as well as personal bests for her relay splits. Her previous personal best in the 50-yard freestyle had been 26.3 seconds.

“She was real excited to get that best time,” Dusseault said.

The Bulldogs will return to action April 17 when they host Canyon Crest.
