Boys swim overpower Patriots
Ramona High School’s 132-31 boys swim victory over Orange Glen April 3 gave the Bulldogs an overall record of 2-2-1 in dual meets and also provided Ramona Coach Frank Yturralde with his first win in Valley League competition.
“I think it was good for the boys, too,” Yturralde said of the win, which gave Ramona a 1-1 Valley League mark.
The win in Escondido followed a non-league loss April 2 at home against Grossmont.
“They were a tough team,” Yturralde said of the Foothillers. “They may have been bigger than Mount Carmel as far as numbers.”
The Bulldogs won four of 12 events against Grossmont in the 104-76 loss. James Oneto won both the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley. Albert Valentin took first in the 100-yard butterfly, and Josh Sammons had the top diving score.
The results of non-league meets can be used for CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) qualifying times, which are the only criteria for CIF meet selection.
“It went well,” Yturralde said of the meet against Grossmont. “Grossmont was a real good team to swim against. It’s good competition.”
Orange Glen didn’t have a diver, so only the 11 swimming events were scored in the April 3 meet.
“In a lot of cases we took 1, 2, and 3, or 1, 3, and 4,” Yturralde said.
Kari Gonter obtained his first varsity win in the 500-yard freestyle. Mike Jones won both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events. Stephen Donellan won the 200-yard freestyle race. Daniel Thorngren won the 100-yard backstroke, Alan Williams took first in the 100-yard breaststroke, Valentin had the fastest time in the 100-yard butterfly, and Oneto provided Ramona with the first-place points in the 200-yard individual medley.
Yturralde split his relay teams.
“I tried to make it even,” he said. “I tried to make it as close as possible.”
In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Ramona’s teams placed first and second with times of 3:49 and 3:50.
“That was actually a pretty good race,” Yturralde said.
The Bulldogs’ next meet will be at home April 17 against Canyon Crest.
