Take time to enjoy spring sports

It is the spring season and as it heats up take advantage of the nice weather and attend a spring sporting event.

The boys track team is the defending CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) champion. The girls team is much improved and is competitive. The two teams run together, so one can see both teams at the same meet.

There are three home meets still on the schedule. Ramona goes against Orange Glen on April 2, Valley Center on April 23 and Oceanside on May 7. All of the home meets start at 3:15 p.m.

If your work schedule doesn’t allow you to attend the afternoon meets, the Dawgs compete at Patrick Henry High School on Saturday, April 4, in the Movin Shoes Classic and at Otay Ranch High School on April 25 in the Mustang Invitational. The CIF Prelims and Finals are Saturday meets on May 23 and May 30 at nearby Mt. Carmel.

The Bulldog baseball team plays in the afternoons and on Saturdays. The Dawgs play exciting baseball and will be in the hunt for the Valley League title and the CIF title.

The home games feature the best snack bar in the North County. Tim Muren cooks some of the best hot dogs and hot links in the county. Don’t bother to stock up on seeds or bring drinks. Tim and his assistant chefs have a complete menu.

There is also a snack bar at the junior varsity games. The Dawgs schedule also includes Saturday games at San Marcos on April 18 at 11 a.m. and at Valley Center on May 9, also at 11.

The Lady Bulldog softball team also plays a plethora of home games. The team’s Saturday dates are all done, but they are going on a road trip that one might want to attend. Coach Shuler is taking his Lady Dawgs to Las Vegas from April 4 through April 8. Contact him for game times and details.

The softball team also has a snack bar at home games, and for the second year they are playing their home games at home.

The Lady Bulldog lacrosse team plays evening home games. Ramona plays Valley Center (4/13), Mission Hills (5/4), Mt. Carmel (5/6) and Fallbrook (5/13) at home. All games start at 5 p.m. It would be a great way to become familiar with a new spring sport.

The boys and girls swim teams have a busy schedule. They have home meets on April 14, May 1 and May 8 against Canyon Crest, Westview and Oceanside. All meets start at 3:15. They also have Saturday dates on April 25 at Palomar College at 9 a.m. May 2 at Mt. Carmel at 8 a.m.

Coach Doug Failla’s boys tennis team plays at one of the nicest facilities in the county. The team still has home matches against Valley Center (4/14), Oceanside (4/21), Mt. Carmel (4/23) and San Marcos (4/28). The matches start at 3:15 at Riviera Oaks Resort.

The varsity boys’ volleyball team plays its home games at 4:40 p.m. in the RHS gym. They will contend for the league crown. They are well coached and exciting to watch. The junior varsity and frosh teams play before the varsity at 3:30 p.m.. the Bulldogs have home games on April 15 (Orange Glen), April 24 (Valley Center), April 29 (Mt. Carmel), May 6 (San Marcos) and May 8 (Oceanside).

Unfortunately very few fans will get an opportunity to see one of the best golf teams in the school’s history.  Since there is no gallery in high school golf, Coach Jerry Patenaude’s Bulldogs will go unseen for the most part.

For specific times and dates check Ramona High School’s web site at www.ramonausd.net. The complete spring schedule is on the site.

As the weather warms up, take time to enjoy the spring sports.
