Tennis ends season ninth in region

Ramona High School entered four doubles teams in the Valley League Doubles Championship at Kit Carson Park.

Elizabeth Branco and Ashley Shields defeated Nguyen and Thoa of San Marcos 6-4 and 6-3, and Alexa Stykel and Sami Marsch defeated Aldridge and Masing of Orange Glen 6-0 and 6-1 to advance to the second round of tournament play.

Andrea Briseno and Jordan McWhorter lost to Armstrong and Hildebrand of Valley Center 6-1 and 6-1, and Rachel Williams and Brittany Larzalere lost to Farr and Hiroshige of San Marcos 6-2 and 6-0. Both teams were eliminated from the tourney.

In the second round, Branco and Shields advanced to the quarter-finals by beating Liu and Ferrare of Westview 6-2 and 6-1. Stykel and Marsch were eliminated by Rao and Truong of Mt. Carmel 6-0 and 6-0.

Branco and Shields made it to the quarterfinals before being eliminated by the eventual champions Sabi Leon-Choa and Bella Genkina of Mt. Carmel

Ramona had athletes in the first round of singles action. Jennica Castillo beat Joanna Stewart of Mt. Carmel 6-2 and 6-2. Rachel Vaca beat Dalia Zhang of Mt. Carmel 6-0 and 6-0.

Emily Sutch drew the number six seed and defeated Araceli Perez of Oceanside 6-0 and 6-0. Rebecca Romero drew the number seven seed came from behind and won two tiebreakers to beat Meena Bennett of Westview 6-7, 6-3 and 7-6.

Katie Hoffman drew the number five seed and beat her teammate, Jennica Castillo, in the second round 6-4 and 6-2. Emily Sutch also had to play a teammate, Rachel Vaca, in the second round and won 6-1 and 6-0. Rebecca Romero advanced by beating Janet Wittmer of San Marcos 6-0 and 6-1.

Katie Hoffman and Emily Sutch both were eliminated in the semifinals. Hoffman lost to Caroline Zhao of Westview and Sutch fell to Lamella Belgica of Mt. Carmel.

The Lady Dawgs ended the season ranked ninth in the San Deigo Section. It was a good year for Coach Doug Failla and his Lady Bulldogs.
