One of the great things about a community newspaper like the
is the interaction from the readers through their letters to the editor. Letters to the editor give everyone young and old the opportunity to express their views and opinions on pretty much anything that is going on. It also provides a platform to disagree on editorials, other letters to the editor, guest commentaries and to provide more information on news stories as well.
Since the “letters to editor” are so popular, there are some rules and regulations that need to be followed. First, you must keep your letters to 300 words or less. This keeps the information more directed and to the point. It also helps us include more letters as we are always pressed for space. Second, choose a tone for your letter that gets your point across but does not attack any individual with slanderous accusations or information that cannot be verified. The
will not publish any such type of letter.
Third, and this is a big one, if you do not include your name, community and a phone number (only your name and community will be published) so we can call you if we have any questions, you will not get your letter published. And no, anonymous does not qualify as a legit name. If you truly believe in what you’re submitting, you should not have any problem including your name.
And last, our deadline for letters is Monday at noon for consideration of that week’s paper.
So keep your letters to 300 words or less, no vicious attacks and make sure you include your name, address and phone number. We look forward to your letters and will publish as many as we can.
