Tennis team swings third in CIF playoffs

Ramona High’s varsity tennis team justified its three seed in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Division II team playoffs by finishing third in the playoffs.

The Lady Dawgs will go on and play in the Valley League individual tournament and hope to advance to the CIF individual tournament. They played a very challenging schedule in a tough league and ended up with a winning record as they finished with a 10-7 record.

The Lady Bulldog tennis team won the CIF Division II quarterfinal match over Steele Canyon 11-7 at Riviera Oaks Racquet Club.

Every singles player won two sets and two valuable team points. Steele Canyon’s number one singles player Unique Allen won three sets. She was the only Cougar to win a set.

Katie Hoffman got the nod at number one singles and went 3-6, 6-2 and 6-0. Emily Stuth went 0-6, 6-1 and 6-2. Rebecca Romero went 2-6, 6-2 and 7-5.

Ashley Shields and Elizabeth Branco took two sets by going 6-4, 4-6 and 6-1. Sami Marsch and Alexa Stykel also took two team points by registering scores of 2-6, 6-4 and 6-4. Rachel Williams and Brittany Larzalere went 3-6, 5-7 and 6-2.

Ramona faced second seeded and undefeated Valhalla High School on the road in the semi-finals. The Lady Bulldog played well but came up short, losing 10-8.

Ramona’s number one doubles team, Ashley Shields and Elizabeth Branco, won three sets and scored three of the team’s 8 points.

Sami Marsch and Alexa Stykel also picked up a point by going 2-6, 6-4 and 3-6. Rachel Williams and Brittany Larzalere went 3-6, 4-6 and 1-6.

In singles action, Hoffman went 0-6, 7-5 and lost a tie-breaker 6-7 (3-7). Sutch picked up two sets by going 1-6, 6-4 and won a tie-breaker 7-6 (7-5). Romero went 0-6, 6-1 and 2-6.
