JV, frosh football squads squelch Westview High
The Ramona High School freshman and junior varsity football teams ensured winning records with victories over Westview High School.
The frosh shut out Westview 13-0. Westview’s head frosh coach is RHS alum Doug Packwood. Doug’s father, Jack, was the founder of Pop Warner Football in Ramona. Doug also coaches two Pop Warner teams in the Poway area.
Ramona’s frosh defense set the tone early as they forced Westview into a three and out on the Wolverine’s first possession, forced a fumble on the second possession and recorded a three and out on the third and fourth possessions.
Jacob Gallegos, Steve Rothermel, Sam Noel and Jared Godes all recorded sacks. Defensive lineman, Devin Rhodes had an interception. Grant Faddis came up with a deflection in the end zone in the fourth period to help preserve the shutout. The Pup defense had six three and out series overall.
Quarterback Travis Stevens led the offense for the Bullpups. Stevens completed 10 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. One of his passes was a 5-yard TD toss to Kwayde Miller.
Stevens’ favorite target was Josh Mahaffey. Mahaffey had five catches for 77 yards.
Shane Barnes led the Pups in rushing with 128 yards on 30 carries and one touchdown.
“Our offensive line did a great job of protecting our quarterback and they opened the holes for the running game,” said Coach Mike Ernst. “Our defense dominated the Westview offense the entire game. We stopped the run and the pass. I am proud of the way we bounced back from a defeat.”
Junior Varsity
The Ramona junior varsity remained undefeated in Valley League action by beating Westview on the road 22-17. The JVs are now 7-1-1 overall and are 5-0 in league play.
They host Oceanside High School in the Dawg Pound in a battle for the league title Friday at 4:30.
All of the scoring occurred in the first half. Ramona scored first when Nate Lutu run scored the first of his two rushing touchdowns.
Colin Murphy added the PAT and Ramona had a lead that it would not surrender. Logan Peterson scored a TD and Nate Hunt ran for two two point conversions.
Ramona’s defense gave up 17 points but completely stopped the Wolverine running game. At halftime, defensive coaches Chuck Delacruz and Jim Piva made adjustments to the pass defense, and the Dawgs shut the Wolverines in the second half.
Ramona controlled the ball and used up much of the clock but failed to score after intermission. The Dawgs did have one TD pass nullified on a penalty.
The Dawgs ran for 179 yards and passed for 137. Jake Graham hit eight receivers with passes. The play of the day was a diving one-handed grab by Bryson Garcis that kept the initial scoring drive.
Kyle McNamara led the Dawgs in rushing with 73 yards.
The Ramona secondary and linebackers knocked down several passes. Cody made the defensive play of the game when he knocked down a pass in the end zone with 11 seconds left in the game.
Matt Neyland, Fidel Lopez and Marshall Thrasher kept constant pressure on the Wolverine quarterbacks.
