Share

Mt. Carmel is ranked fourth in the San Diego California Interscholastic Federation section. Ramona is unranked.

Somebody made a mistake. Coach Steve Koch’s Bulldog wrestling team gave the Sundevils all they could handle in the first Valley League match of the year as they lost 34-31 in a match that was not settled until the last second.

The match started in the 135-pound weight class and Max Hughes lost a major decision to Anthony Weber to put the Dawgs behind 4-0. Jared Widner (140) tied the match by recording a major decision over Jonny Fitzmaurice.

Brodie Chenowth (145) gave the Dawgs the lead by recording a pin over Mitsuyoshi Smyth in 4:38.

Aidan Sargent beat Thomas Pacheco (152) by fall to tie the match at 10.

Alex Unger gave Mt. Carmel the lead by beating Connor Martin by decision in the 160-pound bout.

Artem Mavrin added to the Sundevil lead as he pinned Adrian Ceballos in the 171-pound bout. Brian Orr then made it a 16-19 match as he pinned Brian Quach in 4:35 in the 189 bout. Brett Germain (215) then outwrestled Ted Kassen to tie the match at 19.

Dannery Apaez pinned Brandon Mendoza in 1:23 in the heavyweight bout to give the Dawgs a 25-19 lead.

Conor Koch lost a controversial bout in the 103-pound class in overtime to Abdul Dahman as the Sundevils cut the Bulldog lead to 25-22. It appeared that Koch had pinned Dahman early in the first period and that Koch had recorded a take down in overtime, but the Dawgs did not get either call.

Alex Weber beat Eddie Delgado (112) by a decision and the score was tied with three bouts left on the card.

Spaso Ilich recorded a pin over Mt. Carmel’s Steven Martinez with 4 seconds left in the bout and the Dawgs led 31-25.

Sean Conroy (125) dropped decision to Brad West in a hard fought bout and Ramona led 31-28 going into the last bout.

Waldo Saldivar (130) took an early lead but lost by fall in 3:58 as the Sundevils won a very well wrestled and hard fought match.

“I am very proud of the way every wrestler competed,” said Coach Steve Koch. “They are the Number 4 team in the county and we were in the match until the very end. If we continue to improve and wrestle with the heart that we showed against Mt. Carmel, we will win the CIF.

Junior Varsity

The junior varsity wrestling team lost its league opener to Mt Carmel, 46-30.

Greg Peterson (119), Landon Jones (135), Colton Houlihan (189) and Marshall Thrasher (215) all recorded pins in the match. Lorenzo Lizotte won by default.

Frosh/Exhibition

Ramona beat Mt. Carmel in a frosh exhibition match, 51-21.

Rio Rodriquez (103), Eli Jaurequi (125), Bryan Coane (130), Christian wtren (135), Kirk Kaliszewski (140), Conner Gomez (1456), Levi Lotero (160) and Jeff Shawhan (171) all recorded pins in the match. Andrew Lisowski won by a decision in the 189-pound bout.
