Lady Cagers open Mission Bay tourney with two wins

Dan Marshall’s girls varsity basketball team opened the Mission Bay Tournament with two impressive victories over Francis Parker High School and Crawford High School.

The Lady Bulldogs improved their record to 9-3 as they take a week off before resuming play in the tourney on Jan. 2.

The Dawgs defeated Francis Parker 49-25 at Mission Bay High School. Ramona’s defense completely shut down the Lancerettes.

“We had them shut out for the first six minutes of the first period and we didn’t allow a point in the third period, said Coach Marshall. “Every player played and played well particularly on defense.”

Janet Nasman led all scorers with 16 points and could have outscored Francis Parker if she had played the entire game. Also in the double figures was Kathryn Owens with 10 points.

Paige Conroy (5), Chelsea Maurer (5), Jessica Beam (4), Linze Cole (3), Kayla Lawler (2), Tori Sheppard (2) and Felisha Stead (2) also scored in the game.

Crawford High School was no match for the Lady Bulldogs as Ramona beat the Colts 77-20 — and it could have been worse.

The Lady Dawgs scored the first 20 points of the game and did not use a press defense at any time of the game.

Owens led all scorers and outscored Crawford’s entire team with 23 points. Maurer contributed 12 points.

Nasman dominated the boards at both ends of the court as Ramona seldom gave Crawford a second shot. Owens, Maurer and Nasman only played about half of the game.

Sheppard (2), Conroy (2), Stead (3), Christie Flores (1), Morgan Gross (6), Tessa Balcom (2), Cole (11), Kellie Schoepp (5), Kayla Lawler (4) and Nasman (6) all scored in the tournament win.

Marshall was pleased with the play of his team.

“Parker went to the playoffs last season and does very well in all sports,” he said. “We kept our intensity and every player played well and improved.”

Junior varsity

The junior varsity players opened their season by winning the Coronado Tournament.

In the opening game, Ramona beat Mater Dei High School of Chula Vista 56-9.

Katie Wheelehon led all scorers with 13 points. Lindsey Spieker (3), Megan Buckley (6), Stephanie DeStefano (6), RaeAnn Vantol (18), Hannah Jones (6), Morgan Gunderson (5) and Courtney Robinson (6) all scored in the win.

Ramona beat Point Loma High School 48-15 in the second round of the tourney. RaeAnn Vantol led the Lady Dawgs in scoring with 14 points.
