Girls open basketball season with wins

Ramona High School’s varsity girls basketball team opened the season by taking third place in the Coronado Thanksgiving Shootout. Kathryn Owens and Janet Nasman were selected to the all-tournament team.

The Lady Dawgs had a 57-32 win over University City High School. Nasman led all scorers with 18 points. Kellie Schoepp and Owens registered in double figures with 11 points apiece. Linze Cole (3), Kayla Lawler (4) and Chelsea Maurer (8) scored in the victory.

Ramona lost its second game in the tournament to Imperial High School 49-42. Maurer led Ramona with 13 points, Cole scored 12 points, and Schoepp and Owens scored 8 points each.

The Lady Bulldogs got back on the winning track with a 61-35 victory over Point Loma High School on the second day of the tourney. Owens led all scorers with 13 points as 12 players scored in the contest. Schoepp (10), Tori Sheppard (2), Jessica Beam (2), Paige Conroy (4), Christi Flores (2), Morgan Gross (4), Tessa Balcolm (5), Cole (6), Kayla Lawler (1), Maurer (4) and Nasman (8) all tallied in the win.

The Lady Dawgs finished their first week of play with a 54-36 victory over Chula Vista High School. Janet Nasman controlled the paint and led all scorers with 15 points. Linze Cole also scored in double figures with 13 points. Tori Sheppard (3), Paige Conroy (4), Kellie schoepp (3), Lawler (1) and Maurer (6) all tallied in the victory.

Ramona returned to Coronado on Saturday, Dec. 6, to win the third place game over Hilltop High School 64-45. Owens led all scorers with 21 points. Schoepp scored in double figures with 11 points. Cole (5), Gross (2), Maurer (9), Lawler (4), Nasman (4), Conroy (2) and Sheppard also scored in the victory.

The Lady Dawgs went directly form the Coronado Thanksgiving Shootout to the Bronco Invitational. In the first game of the tourney at Poway High School, Ramona defeated Patrick Henry High School 41-37.

Schoepp pulled a switch on her 17th birthday. Instead of getting gifts from the team, she gave the Lady Bulldogs some presents.

The birthday girl led the team in scoring with 13 points and scored three crucial field goals and two clutch free throws in the final seconds to ensure the victory. She then supplied the team with ice cream cake after the game.

Nasman was a presence in the key. Nasman scored 12 points and grabbed several key rebounds. Cole (5), Owens (7) and Maurer (4) also scored against the Patriots.

In the second round of the Bronco Invitational, Ramona defeated Francis Parker High School 56-39. Nasman led both teams in rebounds and scoring. She scored 19 points from her low post position.

Owens registered 10 points, and Paige Conroy (2), Christi Flores (2), Morgan Gross (2), Linze Cole (3), Kellie Schoepp (7), Kayla Lawler (5) and Chelsea Maurer also scored in the victory.

Ramona lost to Poway in the third round of the tourney, 56-42. The Lady Dawgs played well but came out cold after halftime as Poway outscored the Lady Dawgs 17-5 in the third period.

Owens led the Lady Dawgs with 12 points. Maurer (11), Schoepp (11), Nasman (6) and Cole (2) also scored against the Titans.

After two weeks of play, the Lady Bulldogs are 6-2.
