Boys basketball wins Red Devil Invitational

The Ramona Bulldog varsity boys basketball team opened the season in impressive fashion. The Dawgs won the Red Devil Invitational and placed two players on the all-tournament team.

Dodge McIntosh was selected as the tournament MVP and Cameron Kolk was named all tournament.

“We played well as a team and eliminated mistakes as the tournament went on,” said Coach Ken Scheib.

In the first game of the Red Devil Invitational, Ramona beat Preuss High School 71-63, and scored from long range as the Bulldogs hit seven 3-point shots.

McIntosh scored 15 of his 27 points from beyond the arch. Andrew Alcaraz scored 18 points. Other scorers included Jared Engler (5 points), and Josh Leiber hit treys. Tyler Jordan (5) and Zach Winds (1) also scored in the victory.

The Dawgs continued their winning ways by beating Montgomery High School 78-48. They continued to hit from long range as they hit ten 3-point goals.

Winds hit five 3-pointers for all of his 15 points. McIntosh sank four from beyond the arch and had a game high 25 points. Alcaraz had one 3-point goal and 8 points. Cameron Kolk (7), Jared Engler (6), Tyler Jordan (5), Keith Scheib (5), Garland Marshall (3), Josh Leiber (2) and Kwayde Miller (2) also scored against Montgomery.

The Bulldogs left no doubt that they belonged in the championship game of the Red Devil Invitational as they beat Escondido Charter High School 78-31. Ramona’s defense held Escondido Charter to 2 points in the first period and 5points in the fourth period.

Three Bulldogs scored in double figures as the Dawgs continued to pour in ten 3-point goals. Engler scored 15 points to lead all scorers.

Alcaraz and McIntosh each contributed 14 points. Miller (9), Kolk (6), Leiber (6), Winds (6), Marshall (3), Scheib (3) and Jordan (2) added to the tourney semifinal game.

“We really came together as a team,” said Scheib. “We were a little nervous in the first game and committed 31 turnovers. We cut our turnovers to eleven and nine respectively in the last two games and that really has improved our game.”

The Dawgs never trailed in the championship game of the tournament as they continued to take advantage of their 3-point shots. McIntosh led all scorers with 14 points, 9 from beyond the arch. Leiber contributed 9 points all from beyond the 3-point line.

Winds scored eight points; six were from long range. Alcaraz (6), Kolk (6), Scheib (6) and Engler (5) also scored in the championship game.
