Lottery scam targets veterans, senior citizens, warns district attorney

A lottery scam using the San Diego County seal appears to be targeting veterans and senior citizens, warns the district attorney’s office, which is investigating and asking additional victims to report it.

“These scammers are using the legitimacy of a government seal to prey on vulnerable seniors who served their country. For my 65th birthday — when did I get so old? — my sister gave me a plane ticket to visit her in New York. She pointed out that we have lost Mom and Dad and Uncle Seymour and we’re pretty much all that is left of our family.

It made me think about some other siblings who once asked me to settle a squabble about how they were going to bury their dad. One insisted on an all-out military sendoff, while the other held firm for a small civilian ceremony.

Ramona Senior Center is waiting for change — your change, your loose change sitting in glass jars, old coffee cups and cans around your house that you just can’t quite get to rolling up and carting to the bank.

Ramona Senior Center is interested in the smallest denomination (those pesky pennies) along with any and all coins you care to donate. Ramona Senior Center’s budget was slashed due the sequestration 20 percent.

Blood pressure screenings are offered to the public in the Ramona Community Center lobby from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15.

Wednesdays are Lucky Lunch Day at Ramona Senior Activity Center this month. Two winners each Wednesday will be selected. Details are at the center.

Friday, Aug. 9: Eggplant Parmesan, garlic bread, mixed vegetables, fruit cocktail.
Monday, Aug. 12: Crab cakes, scalloped potatoes, broccoli.
Tuesday, Aug. 13: Hawaiian chicken, rice, stir fry vegetables, cookies, salad.
Wednesday, Aug. 14: Chili dogs, seasoned potatoes, coleslaw, cantaloupe.
Thursday, Aug. 15: Macaroni and cheese with ham slice, carrots, Mandarin oranges.
Friday, Aug. 15: Oven fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, cake with an orange.
Dinner-style meals are served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Meals also are delivered to the homebound.
Suggested lunch donation for seniors age 60 and older and for the homebound is $4. Transportation is $1. Lunch for a non-senior guest of a senior is $6. For reservations and more information, call 760-789-0440.

Christmas in July

Members of the Backcountry Quilters display the Christmas placemats they have been sewing for the Ramona Senior Center’s Christmas dinner and those in the Meals on the Go program.

Everyone attending the senior center’s Christmas dinner in December will receive one of the placemats, which are dual-sided with a non-Christmas motif on the reverse side. The Backcountry Quilters, a philanthropic group, plans to sew 150 placemats. Pictured, from left, are Cecilia Hart, Janet Haas, Candy Mittag, Dee McClelland and Myrl Bivens.
