Ramblers plan first trip of 2013

The holidays aren’t here yet, but the Ramona Ramblers Travel Club is already planning trips for the New Year. Their first trip of 2013 is to Mesquite, Nev., and will include Zion National Park.

The Ramblers will be at Casa Blanca Hotel & Casino in Mesquite for the three-day, two night trip. the second day includes an escorted tour of the local area with a step-on guide. Also included is a trip to Zion and a ride on the shuttle.

The all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner with meat sauce in the Ramona Senior Activity Center raised at least $750 for the center.

The center is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., except for legal holidays, in Ramona Community Center at 434 Aqua Lane. It will be closed on Monday, Nov. 12, for Veterans Day.

Senior Activity Center: Menu and activities

Dinner-style meals are served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Meals also are delivered to the homebound.

Suggested lunch donation for seniors age 60 and older and for homebound is $4. Transportation is $1. Lunch for a non-senior guest of a senior is $6. For reservations and more information, call 760-789-0440.

School district seeks volunteers to tutor reading

Ramona Unified School District and OASIS (Older Adult Service and Information System) are seeking older adult and parent volunteers to help a child experience the joy of reading. OASIS reading tutors are paired with students in grades one through three, one-on-one, once a week for an hour.

No teaching experience is necessary, “just a warm heart and a desire to help a child experience the joy of reading.”

Ramblers enjoy trip to Riverside resort

Members of the Ramona Ramblers Senior Travel Club really enjoyed their trip to the Riverside Casino & Resort, reports Liz Prafke, tour director.

On the second night of the Sept. 4-6 trip, they were treated to a luau overlooking the Colorado River with other senior travel groups. They all dressed in Hawaiian-style clothing, and the casino provided music with singers and gave a lei to everyone.

Ramblers plan matinee trip to Welk theater

Ramona Ramblers Travel Club plans a trip to the Lawrence Welk Theater in Escondido to see “If you ever leave me, I’m going with you,” starring the husband and wife team of Renee Taylor and Joe Bologna.

Included in the Nov. 10 trip is a matinee show, brunch buffet, transportation, and driver’s tip. Costis $80 per person.

The bus will depart at 10 a.m. from Kmart parking lot behind Subway and will return at approximately 4:30 p.m.

Thursday, Aug. 16: Barbecue beef sandwich, coleslaw salad, chips, fruited Jello.

Friday, Aug. 17: Birthday lunch of oven fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, Scandinavian vegetables, cake and an orange.
