Golfers invited to tee off for wildlife

The public is invited to participate in the 2014 Wildlife Golf Tournament, hosted by The Fund for Animals Wildlife Center and San Vicente Golf Resort on Friday, March 21.

Proceeds from the tournament will help fund programs and services for regional wildlife. Fund for Animals, an affiliate of The Humane Society of the United States, primarily rescues and cares for native wildlife with the goal of returning them to the wild.

Free compost workshop to be held Saturday

A free, two-hour interactive workshop on the basics of backyard composting and vermicomposting (composting with worms) will be offered by a nonprofit group from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 8, at Schwaesdall Winery.

To be presented by educators with Solana Center for Environmental Innovation, the program will explain how to improve the health of a garden and soil, and how to conserve water and support local sustainability. The workshop will show what is needed to get started with a composting bin that fits different needs and lifestyles. Opportunity drawings will also be available.

Desert Safari set for Ocotillo Wells SVRA

The 52nd Annual Desert Safari, a family-friendly off-road event, will be held Feb. 28 to March 2 in the Truckhaven Hills area of the North Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area near Borrego Springs. Hosted by Tierra Del Sol, a nonprofit club that uses portions of the proceeds to fight land closures and to keep trails open, the event draws people from the Ramona area as well as across the country and other countries.

Desert Safari attracts around 10,000 people, said Wayne Miller of Miller Off-Road Products in Ramona.
