Search continues for missing Ramona man

Authorities continue to search for a 67-year-old Ramona man, missing from his home in the 17000 block of Handlebar Road since early Tuesday morning.

Sgt. John Boyce of the sheriff’s Ramona station said residents can help by checking barns, sheds or other structures on their properties.

Carl Salayer

Carl Salayer, described as 6 feet, 3 inches tall, 140 pounds, mostly bald with some gray hair and a gray mustache, suffers from Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.

Anyone who sees a man matching Salayer’s description should call 911, said Boyce.

The sheriff’s department said Salayer is soft-spoken but hears well and may attempt to hide from law enforcement and residents.

Salayer is believed to have walked away from his residence between 2:30 and 6:30 a.m. Tuesday. Family members with whom he lives discovered him missing when they woke up Tuesday morning, said Lt. Hank Turner of the sheriff’s Ramona station. It is unknown what clothing he is wearing but Turner said he was wearing only undergarments when he went to bed.

The sheriff’s department has set up a command post at Highland Valley and Handlebar roads. On Tuesday, approximately 50 members of the department searched for Salayer, some going house to house. Boyce said some teams continued through the night and a secondary search is planned for Wednesday. Senior volunteers from the Ramona station are distributing flyers to put up in Ramona businesses, said Boyce.

I would like to thank the people of Ramona for their support in helping us search for Carl Salayer and the community support of our efforts. It is a great reminder why people love living up here because in times of crisis the people of Ramona rally to help each other. The Deputies that work and live here are proud to call this community home.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. This story really hits home. My mother who has dementia has wandered a couple of times. We are always on high alert with her. For those loved ones with dementia/Alzheimers caregivers need to do anything to keep them safe. Close the doors and place a chain so that if they open the door it gets stuck, or put a door chime. Register them with MedicAlert and they provide a charm with the persons info. God Bless.
