Ramona High School’s girls track and field team opened its season March 13 at home with a win over Rancho Buena Vista.
The Bulldogs took first-place points in 11 of the 16 events and swept both hurdles races.
“It was nice to get a win in the first meet for the girls,” said coach Sherri Edwards. “I was pleased with the way that the kids competed.”
Both of the hurdles races were won by sophomore Emily Sojourner, who took 17.83 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles and 51.86 seconds in the 300-meter race. Morgan Wilson was second in both events, completing her 100 meters in 18.53 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles in 54.14 seconds. Kinley McKay had a third-place time of 18.87 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles while Kim Klarer was third in the 300-meter hurdles at 1:00.03.
“That was pretty exciting,” Edwards said of sweeping the hurdles races.
Holly Stallman, Karah Banegas, and Courtney Ford each won two events. Stallman finished the 100-meter dash in 12.68 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 27.00 seconds. Banegas threw the shot put 33 feet 4 inches and the discus 90 feet 3 inches. Ford had distances of 16 feet in the long jump and 31 feet 7 inches in the triple jump.
The triple jump was the first for Ford in a high school competition.
“Did really well on that,” Edwards said.
Courtney Jackson cleared 8 feet 6 inches to win the pole vault while Klarer was second with a distance of 8 feet. Anna Sundrud earned her first Ramona track and field victory with a time of 2:38.18 in the 800-meter run.
Stallman, Perla Cruz, Hannah Farhat, and Sundrud won the 4×400 relay race with a time of 4:32.40.
“Overall I was pleased with our first meet,” said Edward.
Rancho Bernardo High School was the site of the March 15 Bronco Invitational. Some of the relay races utilize heats, and Ramona’s 4×400 team of Farhat, Katherine Lorentz, Stallman, and freshman Tuesday Christopher won its heat with a 4:21.24 performance. Ford, Wilson, Farhat, and Stallman were second in their 4×100 heat with a time of 51.65 seconds.
Ramona’s girls finished fourth in the sprint medley relay with a time of 1:57.16. Wilson and Farhat had 100-meter segments, Stallman held the baton for 200 meters, and Lorentz represented Ramona for the 400-meter anchor portion.
Jackson’s distance of 11 feet 1 inch placed second in the invitational’s pole vault while Ford was second in the long jump with a distance of 16 feet 10 inches. A timer malfunction during the invitational 100-meter dash deprived Stallman of a time while visual observations gave her a fifth-place finish.
The Bulldog girls have a dual meet at Westview High School Thursday afternoon. The Falcon Relays at Torrey Pines High School will be held Saturday.
