Free workshop designed for single mothers set for Jan. 11

A nonprofit faith-based organization established in Ramona in 2012 has one purpose: “To help, support and serve single mothers.

It calls itself The Blue 1 Mission, Supporting Single Moms and, one of its leaders says, the group “is thrilled to offer our first, 100 percent complimentary, biannual ‘Work Shop’ for single moms in the awesome community of Ramona.”

The Work Shop will be in Mountain View Community Church, 1191 Meadowlark Way, starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11.

Free childcare will be offered for children from infancy to age 14.

“This will be an exciting day of shooting fire extinguishers, getting their hands dirty under the hoods of their cars, and becoming skilled in the use of many different types of tools,” said Laurie Davidson, one of the group’s founders.

Ramona Fire Department has volunteered to show the women how to correctly discharge a fire extinguisher.

“What is the best way to learn?” Davidson asked, quickly replying, “By doing. Yes, ladies, you will be shooting the extinguishers yourselves.”

Leah and Jake Harris of Eiler Tire and Brake will bring their years of experience to the Work Shop and teach moms how to check the fluid levels of their cars, change a tire, properly check tire pressure, and answer any questions they may have to keep them safely on the road and their cars out of the shop.

Also donating their time and knowledge will be Ransom Brothers. The mothers will have an opportunity to use hammers, cordless drills, levels and various tools necessary to correctly hang pictures, towel bars, curtains, fix door handles, etc.

“We are so thankful for the amazing generosity from these local businesses that share our vision in reaching out to single moms in Ramona,” said Davidson.

The Blue 1 Mission also will provide water during the Work Shop and a complimentary lunch for the mothers and their children to wrap up the event.

The Work Shop is limited to 40 single moms.

“It will fill up fast, so register as soon as possible,” advised Davidson.
